California Attorney General Kamala Harris became the first high-profile Democrat to announce that she plans to enter the 2016 race to replace retiring Sen. Barbara Boxer in the U.S. Senate.
Harris, California's top prosecutor, made the announcement Tuesday on her website.
"I want to be a voice for Californians," she wrote, adding that fighting crime, fighting for consumers and fighting for equal rights are her top concerns. Her announcement also came with a big red "Donate" button underneath, and political analysts say a U.S. congressional seat run could cost at least $50 million.
Her announcement came as no surprise to veteran political watchers. Analyst Larry Gerston predicted last week that her name would be on the short list of candidates. But he did add that she has an uphill struggle. Women of color, he said, "have yet to achieve parity with white males."

(278 posts)I fear that if she and Gavin are the future of the Democratic Party in California, we are in for a rather shaky future. She's a nice person, attractive (so's Gavin for that matter), and smart but their collective ambition is going to cost the people of the State of California. Democrats need candidates and leaders, who are not going to bend to the will of their masters. From what I have seen of Kamala in the last ten years is someone who can easily be bought. I can say the same thing about Gavin Newsome and I mention him in this reply because I know him too, and I'm sure that the only reason he's not running is because he thinks he's going to step into the Governor's chair when Jerry Brown is termed out. The Republicans learned from the Kennedy-Nixon TV Debates is that pretty wins and a lot of their candidates in the last fifty years have been attractive people, i.e.: Scott Brown, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann. I fear that Kamala and Gavin are going to be fall in that Modus Operandi, pretty to look at but nothing inside.

(90,061 posts)Garamendi is a guy I've been voting for all my life, and he made a decent insurance commissioner, yet he has voted in Congress on a number of occasions in ways I don't like. But I know where he gets elected from, so I overlook it. My impression of Ms Harris is that she was "shy" at first, but she is showing signs of being more assertive. And the prompt jump in the Senatorial race we just saw would seem to support that, and also your claim that she is ambitious. I should say so.
