2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumConventions 2016: Republicans in Cleveland. Democrats... in Brooklyn?!?
As you may have noted this week, the Republicans have decided to have their 2016 national convention in Cleveland. A solid, if uninspired choice: might as well go to a battleground state.
The Democrats haven't decided yet, though the frontrunning cities are Columbus, Ohio, Philadelphia -- and Brooklyn?
I'll admit I'm ready for Hillary. I will also admit that she won't be a magnet for a youth vote the way Obama was. Maybe there are ways to mitigate that -- even just the "textsfromHillary" Twitter thing from a while ago did a lot to give her some Millenial cool -- but I think doing the nomination in Brooklyn would be a mistake.
The hot neighborhoods in Brooklyn have became so ridiculously expensive -- Williamsburg is full of glass tower luxury condos -- that even most of the upper-middle-class "creative" kids these days are doing their parentally-subsidized urban adventuring in places like Philly or Baltimore. You can only ask Daddy for so much.
So I don't think Brooklyn is a good choice right now. Especially if the recently buoyant economy starts sinking again, Brooklyn will be way too much let-them-eat-cake.

(33,424 posts)PA is more of a swing state although not recently. I'm not sure of the hotel space in Columbus but I guess there is enough or they would not be a finalist.

(47 posts)Not as dreary as Ohio, but not as chic as Brooklyn, and although PA is blue, it's only light blue really -- also, Senator Pat Toomey (R) is up for relection in 2016, and is vulnerable; anything to increase interest in the election amongst Dems in PA could help to knock him off.
I'm just really cringing at the Brooklyn thing --- if it was said to be New York, even if not in Manhattan, it wouldn't sound so bad; sure NYC is often seen as not-real-America, but it's also still the major American city, and many conventions of both parties have been held there, the Republicans last in 2004.
I guess I could say "talk me down" (or some might, as I'm new, thank me for my concern!) But I'm a little spooked by the fact that Republicans will be talking a lot about the "Lena Dunham Democrats" if the convention is in Brooklyn. Hipster punching is a lot more up-to-date and popular than hippie punching right now for quite solid reasons.

(2,157 posts)I personally believe Columbus would be the best place to hold the 2016 Democratic Convention bcuz Pennsylvania is more solid Democrat than Ohio, & Texas will definitely stay A Republican stronghold, so that wouldn't do much good in the general election....

(47 posts)but here's a recent article that kind of paints Columbus as the frontrunner:
