2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumClinton/Castro 16. Women/men, old/young, white/Latino, established/fresh, Texas.Is there a downside?
I believe this is the ticket that can't be beat. I'll be surprised if it doesn't happen. I suspect Obama made Julian the HUD chief to elevate his profile for this very reason (otherwise, elevating him could possibly compete with Hillary, which I doubt he'd do).
Thoughts? What's the downside of a Clinton/Castro ticket? I don't see much.

(7,596 posts)Castro is way too young and inexperienced, in my opinion. I wouldn't feel all that comfortable with him being second in command to someone who is pushing 70.
Or maybe it's that I simply don't like Hillary and no one you pair her up with could possibly make her more appealing to me.

(63,912 posts)but really, look at what the repukes have. They are one tired party of old white guys sitting around grousing about the days before civil rights and Roe v. Wade...
compared to that, we've got the better hand. And at least we're in the 21st century...

And a PPP poll showed that HRC is competitive in TX without a VP being considered. Add Castro to the mix and it seems possible.
Admittedly the poll is dated, but I don't think opinions on HRC and her GOP counterparts in the poll would have changed all that much.

(15,438 posts)fire them up and get them out to vote should he be on the ticket? Seriously, former9thward?
The greatest fear the GOP have with regard to the minority vote, is the Latino vote. They are the only demographic that's growing quickly whose votes they'll need (if the can make Steven King of Iowa shut up for a while).

(32,082 posts)He likely would help with Hispanics but the R vote margins in TX are too big to overcome at this point.
BlueCaliDem
(15,438 posts)As of 2010, 45% of Texas residents had Hispanic ancestry; these include recent immigrants from Mexico, Central America, and South America, as well as Tejanos, whose ancestors have lived in Texas as early as the 1700s. Tejanos are the largest ancestry group in southern Duval County and amongst the largest in and around Bexar County, including San Antonio, where over one million Hispanics live. The state has the second largest Hispanic population in the United States, behind California.
Hispanics dominate southern, south-central, and western Texas and form a significant portion of the residents in the cities of Dallas, Houston, and Austin. The Hispanic population contributes to Texas having a younger population than the American average, because Hispanic births have outnumbered non-Hispanic white births since the early 1990s. In 2007, for the first time since the early nineteenth century, Hispanics accounted for more than half of all births (50.2%), while non-Hispanic whites accounted for just 34%.

This is the 2010 Census. We're now in 2015.
With Hispanics accounting for over 50% of births in that State, you don't think Castro will be able to get out the Latino/Hispanic vote? Seriously??
former9thward
(32,082 posts)Why are the R vote margins so high in TX? Are the Hispanics just waiting for one of them to be on the ticket?

(41,177 posts)I'm for it. BTW, are people aware of the legal issue of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein & Bill CLINTON's recent association with him on the 'Lolita Express' Jet romping globally during the 2000s?
There are two current DU posts to check out:
-today, Front Page, Video from lawyer Mike Papantonio on the scandal
-today, GD (Gen. Discussion) post, 'Flight Logs put Clinton, Dershowitz on Pedophile Billionaire Sex Jet'.
True or not, and regardless of the degree of Bill's involvement, this will be used all over the RW Media and seriously impact Hillary, the Dem. Party & us.

(13,877 posts)Even an entire book written by a Nebraska State Senator went nowhere. I read it. Shocking, but went nowhere.
I'd wonder what Castro's opinion is. The worst dirt they have on him is that his mother was a member of La Raza in California decades ago. (radical Left Wing) He may not be able to deliver Texas, but he sure will ignite the Hispanic vote nation wide.
Bill is Bill. Everyone already knows it. That train left the station, IMHO.
I believe Clinton/Castro is a good ticket. As of now, she's all we've got. And I'd rather vote for her than allow the Rs a couple of lifetime SCOTUS appointments. Anyone who does not support whoever is the D candidate and stays home will be casting a vote for a couple of lifetime clones of Thomas and Scalia around Robert's age.
In 8 years Julian will be late 40s, experienced, and an awesome candidate for the first Hispanic President. It's past time for that and a Hispanic on the Supreme Court, as well.
