2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThis is how we'll end Republican dominance in the states. from Howard Dean
If you're as heavily invested in politics as I am (and I have a feeling you are), you also tend to spend a lot of time fixating on what's happening in Washington. But in recent years, perpetual gridlock has kept Congress from even functioning properly, let alone taking innovative steps to rebuild our middle class.
In the meantime, the true battleground for the heart and soul of our country has shifted to the states, where we now face an uphill battle. Republicans -- with the help of a massive, well-funded network of corporate-backed, radical right-wing organizations -- have staged an unprecedented coup of state legislatures.
Right now, the GOP controls 68 of the 98 partisan state legislative chambers, more than they have in the history of their party. And they're using that power to pass unpopular legislation that actively undermines the ability of middle-class families to make ends meet.
Democrats need to make a concerted effort to win in 2016 -- and that's where Democracy for America comes in. Since 2004, DFA has been focused on making the 50 State Strategy a reality, supporting Democratic candidates in every state running for every level of office. We have successfully elected 831 DFA-endorsed candidates running for everything from the local school board to the U.S. Senate -- and we are setting ambitious goals for the 2016 electoral cycle.
DFA wants to train and empower 25,000 volunteers by 2016 -- the kind of grassroots army that could tip the balance for Democrats in hundreds of close elections nationwide. Chip in now to help us meet this ambitious goal.

It could get much worse if we don't fight back now.
In 2020, voters will elect state lawmakers who will be responsible for redrawing districts all over the country -- a fundamental driver of who will control Congress and state legislatures for the next decade.

(54,369 posts)Howard explained to me that he felt he could do a lot of good as DNC chair in the opposition, but when we have the White House, the President is the nominal head of the party, not the national party chairman, which is why he stepped down when Obama was elected.
Although--if we retain the White House in 2016, but capture neither House of Congress, I'm going to do some serious pleading with him on a one-on-one, and I'll be soliciting written pleas to bring along with me, if any of you want to write some. We can't have another 4 years of complete gridlock. If the Republicans retain the Senate under a Democratic president, they'll take 3 years to confirm any new Supreme Court Justice a Democrat nominates, no matter how qualified.

You have access to him?
I went to a town hall meeting here in L.A. that was called by the DNC in 2005. They were on a "listening tour" around the country, on the issue of who should be the new chair. They wanted Tim Roemer or somebody else either ready to sell out the rest of women's reproductive rights, or otherwise rather milquetoast, and WE were having none of it. The meeting hall downtown was OVERFLOWING. There were several hundred of us. TOO many to have a chance to speak for two minutes each, even after they extended the meeting another hour or so to accommodate the crowd.
And we WERE NOT HAVING IT. We all got to vote. Out of 500-and-some, there were maybe SIX votes for somebody other than Howard Dean. Speaker after speaker after speaker after speaker stood up to say they wanted Howard Dean. You could tell the DNC panel up on stage was perplexed by this. THEY thought they had a perfect candidate (tim roemer was anti-choice) and they just were so perplexed and bewildered that crowd after crowd as they went around the country - did NOT buy in. We were SIMPLY NOT HAVING IT. They finally gave in because there was simply no mistaking what the rank and file of the party wanted. They could NOT tweak or ignore or scoff at majorities THIS big.
We collectively shoved Howard Dean down their throats. And we had two big wins in a row, in 2006 AND 2008, on his watch. WE, as usual, were right. "Right" as in the full and legitimate established definition of the word "right." As in "CORRECT."

(54,369 posts)We've been friends for nearly 15 years, sometimes play guitar together if we have time, always meet up when we're in the same place at the same time, which is almost never. We last had breakfast together in January when we were both in NYC. It was freezing, but we could have spoken all day. I walked him down to Hillary's office after breakfast, but I wasn't invited to that little meeting (would have loved to have been a fly on the wall, though!). We have each other on cell phone speed dial, so I guess that's "access." His brother, Jim, is a friend, too.
Sometimes I get the rare privelege to introduce Howard to someone he doesn't know--which is REALLY rare, but 5 years ago, before she became seriously ill, I organized a lunch in Washington with me, my brother, Howard, and a distinguished Washington journalist who had been a good friend of my family for about 50 years, but whose path and Howard's had never crossed. Afterward, Helen paid him her highest compliment: "He doesn't talk like a politician at all!" We had planned to meet up again some time, but Helen's health gave out before we could. Fate doesn't grant all wishes.
From that memorable day:

I've met both Howard Dean and Helen Thomas. Briefly. She was the keynote speaker of this regional AP convention I attended back when I was working in local radio news. She was wonderful, and I was THRILLED! She was always my hero. And I later felt so outraged when the bush/cheney White House had her removed from her front row seat. She was the DEAN of the White House Press Corps and they treated her with such disrespect. Only because she asked questions that the whole miserable useless toadying lot of them would not or could not or were afraid to ask. Howard Dean I met at a state Democratic convention where HE was a featured speaker. Got to shake his hand. Every time I look at him I think - "I was right the first time" just as I did upon that horrid, miserable, discouraging early November morning (after the election), when I sadly took my Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker out of the inside rear window of my car and replaced it with my "Dean for America" bumper sticker. And I kept that "Dean for America" sticker there, in defiance, for years. "I was right the first time" THEN, too.

We'll CERTAINLY provide written pleas, for your/our efforts.
