The dozens of members who sleep in their offices are, in effect, spending their weekdays in 100 percent federally subsidized apartments.
They are not charged any rent. They receive no utility bills. They dont pay for the daily cleaning services. Microwaves and refrigerators have been installed in most suites. Theres a half bathroom connected to each personal office, and the showers at the members gym open at 5:30 a.m.
In short, lawmakers who choose their offices as their crash pads are getting a valuable government freebie worth 10 percent or more of their $174,000 annual salary.
The Reich Wing are the true takers.

(23,946 posts)to sit as political representatives in high rent Washington, D.C., now having to maintain two residences?
There is also the issue of the Office of a U.S. Representative literally physically and legally belonging to the Office Holder during tenure.
I am with Bernie on discussing and debating the issues and not the personalities all intended simply to fertilize outrage with no discussion of the why and how to fix.
Personally, a tax free housing allowance comparable to the average rent in an average neighborhood would seem fair, and a lesser proportional allowance if the politician opts to not rent.
Canada seems to be having multiple major scandals over the housing and living expenses fraudulently billed by Senators there, simply because the rules were written too loosely, and the politicians of course are just as greedy and not clever enough just like in America.

(14,733 posts)I think the government should actually provide a 'dormitory' nearby so they could all have rooms to use when in DC, rather than forcing them to find rentals or buy houses.

(50,529 posts)It wouldn't cost THAT much for the government to construct 535 respectable middle-class three-bedroom houses on a piece of land they already own - there are quite a few military installations in the DC area. Build these houses, issue one to each Member of Congress, require them to live there and run a shuttle bus from the housing area to the Capitol twice a day.
