2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOk, you guys want to play the same game? If Sanders wins, will the Clinton supporters back Sanders
100% even if he's not a "real" (according to the Third Way Democrats) Democrat?
That's what I'm wondering.....
That is *WHY* I hate loyalty oaths. Leave that shit for the Republicans.

I will write in Bernie Sanders (proudly) rather than vote for Mrs. Clinton.
I won't be part of the screwing of my children and grandchildren.

(90 posts)I will contribute a little (as I'm one of the 99%) because I have to watch my budget especially when sending a child to a private school. Tuition can get expensive, and even with scholarships that I've been awarded, it still takes a significant chunk of my budget.

(11,175 posts)Will the Democratic nominee in 2016 accept the public campaign financing, with its attendant spending limit, or reject the money (I think it's in the $90 million range) to try to raise a bigger war chest from private donations?
As a first guess, Sanders would take public financing, Clinton would reject it, O'Malley and Chafee I'm not sure about.

(15,720 posts)he'll definitely win the big blue states (that's me) and probably the little blue states (NE) but the middle reds and purples, doubtful. Can he win without one or two? Also doubtful. Take Florida and Ohio for example. Who are they going to ahem, be permitted to vote for, Jeb or Bernie? That's the problem.

(15,720 posts)But not as well as Hillary, in the primary or general, and definitely not well enough to beat Jeb in his own back yard. And in the primaries I see him winning a few New England states, maybe Colorado or Oregon. Maybe some smaller red states like the Dakotas. But the south, or any state that's seen significant recent immigration, meaning California, New York, Texas, Arizona, and the like, I don't think he stands a chance. Which is good because if for some reason Hillary drops out we're probably going to lose this one.
Comrade Grumpy
(13,184 posts)I think that's crazy talk. Those are strongly liberal states and he's a strongly progressive candidate.
Why do you think states with significant immigrant populations would not go for Bernie? Because the Republicans are so good on immigration?
I doubt he would win in the Dakotas. No Democrat does.
And the South is not generally friendly territory for Democrats.
The electoral map favors Democrats in the presidential race. Hillary isn't the only Dem who can win.

(62,325 posts)22% in Iowa, 32% in NH and it only took one month to go from a virtual unknown to climbing each week as more and more people get to hear and know him and most of all look at his record.
He also has so much crossover appeal you see moderate Repubs who are disgusted with their own party every day, signing on to his campaign regularly.
His biggest support will come from Independents, the goal he had from the start and from previously non-voters. They have not even been polled yet, though in one poll on Indies, he was way ahead of Hillary as one would expect.
ucrdem
(15,720 posts)conceivably Iowa, though that's a stretch. Basically he's a novelty act and while he might catch on in the debates and win a few more primaries, if past is prologue he'll stall when the primaries get to the big blue states, where he's sure to get beaten by Hillary. And polls that until recently included Warren are going to show a rise in Sanders support as Warren backers change horse.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)the average American on most issues, than any other candidate. He IS a novelty when it comes to politicians because he's honest, his campaign talk isn't just rhetoric, his long record shows that he has been consistent and WAY ahead of eg, Hillary on important issues and voted that way.
He has iow, some very important qualities in a leader, he has foresight, enough to know NOT to vote for the Iraq War AND the Patriot, demonstrating another quality lacking in many politicians, courage. He supported Gay Marriage and didn't have to 'evolve' on the issue. He did so because it was the right thing to do. Unlike Hillary who was slow to reverse her position not so long ago that 'marriage was a sacred trust between a man and a woman'.
On Wall St, the TPP, Pipeline etc his on the right side again. He voted against NAFTA predicting, what is now a fact, a loss of jobs for Americans.
Hillary has been wrong on so many issues, War, the Patriot Act, even torture, the TPP etc and has had to apologize for her mistakes.
You can't have a leader who gets wrong when people's lives are at stake. Apologizing ten years later and hundreds of thousands of lives later, that doesn't help.
The only thing 'novel' about Bernie is he tells the truth and he acts with foresight and good judgement when he is called to do so. He has all the qualities of a good leader.
ucrdem
(15,720 posts)He might be in sync with Team Snowden-Assange-Greenwald but they're not going to get anyone nominated for anything.

ucrdem
(15,720 posts)Hell he's not even in the same party as Obama. How do you expect the Democrats who turned out in record numbers to elect Obama in 2008, and in respectable numbers to reelect him in 2012, to vote for a guy who has basically spent the last six months calling Obama a liar?

LynneSin
(95,337 posts)who else would they vote for? One of those clowns from the GOP clown car? Heck John McCain was so sure that Clinton supporters were not going to support Obama that he picked Sarah Palin as his VP thinking Clinton supporters would vote for anyone with a set of ovaries.
It was just as bitter 8 years ago yet in the end we all came together and won. BTW I supported neither of them 8 years ago, I was team Biden. When he dropped I stayed neutral because I knew I'd vote for any of them.
ucrdem
(15,720 posts)p.s. Biden is my first choice too if he ever gets in. But I've really come around on Hillary for a couple of reasons, not least that I think she's a much better candidate this time with way better chances. But a sure thing she isn't so I'll be very happy when the primary drama concludes and would also be happy to skip to the general and save the damage.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)but Biden has always been my favorite and we First Staters gotta stick together!

(30,481 posts)Starting to lean O'Malley. I wouldn't just vote for Sanders in the general, I would do so with great joy. Same with Hillary. Look at me!!!!!!!!
I'm not sure why you, or others, take this so personal. Of all the things going on, this is a complete non-issue at this point. Yet you are just as passionate about it as the people you are attempting to malign. Possibly even more so.

(1,221 posts)and all the enthusiasm I can generate (won't do much good here in Kansas) because I know that any Democrat is better than any now prominent republican. But I really think the "My favorite or screw you all" sentiment is much more common among the Clinton Haters than the other way around! False Equivalency again?
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)and everyone showing they would support the other guy.
It would be great if we could think of an example in the last decade where Hillary didn't win a primary that was closely contested and all the Hillary supporters including Hillary herself all jumped onboard and supported the one that did win the nomination and then that Democratic nominee went on to win the Presidency.
Wouldn't that be real proof that Clinton supporters would indeed support Sanders or O'Malley or Chafee or whomever might get the Democratic Nomination should Hillary not win it.

(12,504 posts)Mostly because it clarifies the difference between Clinton supporters, who will do whatever it takes to keep a Republican out of the White House, and many Benie supporters who are willing to sit out a general election because of a personal gripe. The bottom, line is that not one Hillary supporter has said they woul not vote for Bernie if he is the Dem nominee...not one. Bernie camp can't say the same. They would rather "teach everyone a lesson"

(1,837 posts)I have doubts about Sanders' potential effectiveness as POTUS, but if he wins the nomination, I'm definitely in his corner.
To frame it in concrete terms, imagine the choice of a President Bernie Sanders vs. (picking one of the chumps at random) a President Ted Cruz. It's like being offered a choice of dessert between creme brulee and burnt dryer lint.

(100,131 posts)I have seen not one Hillary supporter claim they will not vote for the nominee, whoever that may be. There have been a number of posters say they don't think Bernie can win, but that is not the same thing. We don't hate Bernie. What's to hate?
I have seen quite the active little claque of people who claim to be Bernie supporters saying they will never vote for Hillary. Just tonight I read two posters' claims that they "hate Hillary's guts" and that they will never vote for her if she is the nominee.
Most Bernie supporters here are civil. But that toxic little bunch is doing Bernie no favors.
