Recall absentee ballots issued remains strong all across WI

Rock County (including Beloit, WI):

“Some clerks have told us that voting so far is at near-presidential election levels,” she said. “We can’t determine if this means more people will turn out on June 5 or if it is just people planning to be out of town at the end of the school year.”

Beloit City Clerk Rebecca S. Houseman said absentee voting has been strong.

“We have issued about 560 absentee ballots and 260 of them have been filled in and returned,” Houseman said.

Dane County (including Madison):

On a day when mail carriers didn’t deliver and mourners packed cemeteries for solemn tributes to the dead, hundreds of others stood in long lines outside the Madison city clerk’s office, showing that in this hypercharged election season voting takes no holiday.

“I’m amazed,” said voter Allan Wessel of Madison of the turnout, which hit 379 people in four hours and produced 45-minute waits. “We thought there might be a short little line.”

The clerk’s office took the unusual step of opening for a half-day on Memorial Day, a federal holiday, to allow people to cast early ballots for the June 5 gubernatorial recall election, the first in state history. The line snaked around the corner to the City Hall entrance and, at times, got so long it turned again at the Parks Department office, creating a J-shaped line of voters who weren’t prepared for the wait.

Milwaukee, WI:

Hundreds of voters lined up at the Municipal Building in downtown Milwaukee on Monday to cast absentee ballots ahead of the June 5 election.

Fifty-year-old Cathy Cunningham of Milwaukee says she voted early so she could spend Election Day encouraging others to vote. She says she voted for the Democratic Barrett because she thinks Walker has sold out the state to corporate interests.

Wausau, WI:

At Wausau City Hal , the City Clerk says they have been busy since such voting started May 21. City Clerk Toni Rayala says it has been a busy time for her office. "We've had many requests for absentee ballots. Especially with the political mailers sent out by both parties and special interest groups... we have had 400-500 .. it has increased substantially.

Due to the increase in absentee ballots and the interest in the May primary the city of Wausau will add poll workers for next week's recall race. Rayala says, "I think we could have 50% voter turnout

Superior, WI:

The Superior city clerks office is seeing more absentee vote requests every day.

They say the number of absentee ballots this election could surpass any traditional gubernatorial race in the past.

Superior has hired extra staff to help with the anticipated extra work over the next couple of weeks.

City Clerks say that the high number of absentee voters is a good indicator that overall voter turnout will be very high on June 5th.

"I don't think we are going to be quite as high as the presidential but we are going to be higher than a normal governor's election for turnout." said Superior City Clerk Terri Kalan.

The higher the turnout the better for Democrats.Remember back In 2010 Walker won by 5 In a low turnout election. Some democrats
stayed home and Independents largely voted Republicans nationwide.WI democrats need to focus on getting their people out to
vote and try to convince Independents who are moving back to Obama(forget national polls If you look at state polls you will discover
Obama Is doing well with Independents)

If you have a presidental leval turnout In Wi for recall election that Is good news.

They don't have an Issue like Gay Marrage as a wedge Issue.Plus Republicans worked to keep Democrats from polls on election Day.
