(7,499 posts)I am a former public school teacher and Professor of Education. I sent an email canceling my membership. From what I am hearing from some of my colleagues and former students, who are now teachers, they are doing the same. I imagine things will really heat up in a few weeks when teachers get together for in-services and conferences, not to mention the start of school. This was clearly nepotism as HRC and Randi Weingarten are friends. No way does a candidate who supports charter schools win the support of AFT.

(28,627 posts)apparently they said that they started to poll members in February. Nothing had happened regarding the primary candidates way back then. No one in the union had contacted me. They need to wait until all candidates are on board. Biden said that he may run.

(17,064 posts)...the fact that AFT President Weingartner is on the board of Hillarys Super PAC creates a lot of mistrust. And lack of trust is one of Hillarys big hurtles.

(53,397 posts)read it and tell me they aren't right wing and anti woman.
School-based clinics are now offering to implant IUDs into girls as young as 11.

It is truly amazing that some folks still refuse to believe that a SCHOOL would do anything like that.
When we told one former teacher who is now 93 about the way some schools have been presenting sex education to kids as young as fifth grade, his reaction was, That cant have happened, or theyd have been arrested.
So it happens that Progressives are not the only ones who have an issue with Common Core.

(8,830 posts)are pretty annoyed about it, as well. They are hardly right-wing anything.
Most do not believe that their union should endorse anyone without overwhelming consent, which was not received. Some of them feel that Hillary's support of Common Core means she isn't listening to what they are saying, and I'd imagine there are a number of other reasons, as well.
Please don't turn this into another "omg - those Bernbots (isn't that what you all call them in the HC group?) are dissing our preferred candidate" thing. The OP may not be from one of your approved sites, but the fact is that a lot of teachers are currently unhappy with this endorsement. It's not a Clinton/Sanders battle - it's more of a "the union isn't doing its job of representing us" fight.

The AFT has conducted a long, deliberative process to assess which candidate would best champion the issues of importance to our members, their families and communities. (1) Members have been engaged online, (2) through the "You Decide" website, (3) through several telephone town halls, (4) and through multiple surveysreaching more than 1 million members.
(5) **Additionally**, over the past few weeks, the AFT has conducted a scientific poll of our membership on the candidates and key issues. The top issues members raised were jobs and the economy and public education. Seventy-nine percent of our members who vote in Democratic primaries said we should endorse a candidate. And by more than a 3-to-1 margin, these members said the AFT should endorse Clinton.

Number23
(24,544 posts)was run up and down this site as if it was gospel that Bernie was winning Hispanics.
The charmingly named "BlacksforBernie" Twitter feed which didn't even have 200 members was run up and down this site as "proof" of Bernie's surge among minorities. PeopleofColorforBernie had around 250 members. AA's for Bernie on Facebook has 390 likes. People of Color for Bernie on Facebook is the ONLY minority themed Bernie vehicle that comes close to the 1150 polled by this one union with over 1200 likes. And even that number is absurd considering there are over 100 MILLION racial minorities in the United States.
When someone gets the endorsement of Black Twitter, then that will be something worth actually talking about.
So it's interesting to me that 41% of 50 Hispanics out of 50 MILLION Hispanic Americans polled support Bernie and that's "great news" but when 1150 teachers out of a union of 1.6 million get polled, that's somehow inadequate and horrible. Surreal.
enlightenment
(8,830 posts)1150 polled teachers is sufficient for the AFT to endorse Hillary, would it be similarly sufficient if a petition asking them to recind that endorsement has gathered almost 1169 signatures in 24 hours?
Seems like it should merit the same respect as the poll.
Bottom line is that this isn't about Hillary (or Bernie) as much as it is about union members who are unhappy with the decision their union has made - in their names.
