Its time to draft Al Gore: If Democrats want to win, its clear neither Hillary nor Sanders is the wayHillary's flailing. Biden's grieving. Bernie's a longshot. Gore bridges the party's establishment, progressives
The presidential election is still sixteen months away, but this much is clear: Hillary Clinton is a vulnerable candidate.
Since announcing her candidacy in April, Clintons stature has steadily slipped. Things got even worse this week. We learned, first, that Bernie Sanders eclipsed Clinton in small, individual donations, which is an indicator of popular support among likely voters.
Second, and more problematic, the newest AP poll revealed significant weaknesses among Democrats on a host of issues, including trust, character, and compassion for average Americans.
These numbers are alarming heading into the general election, especially for Democrats. Bernie Sanders is running an important campaign, but its very difficult to see the entire party rallying around him.

Let's stick with the candidates we have.

(53 posts)...I like Bernie, but I also know enough about the electoral college to know he doesn't have a path to winning. I've tried the electoral math several times for him (270towin.com) and have yet to come up with anything that isn't absolutely fantastical to get Bernie over the hump. He's dead in the water.

(12,655 posts)she has so much baggage she has almost no chance in a ge. the rpubs will come out in throngs to vote against her.
with his momentum, bernie is the real shot at keeping the wh.
gore was fine, but his time has passed imo. but he would be a breath of fresh air running the epa in a sanders administration.

(53 posts)I agree Hillary can't win. That's the point of this thread. We need a candidate who can win Ohio and Florida. Bernie doesn't have a prayer of winning either. Hillary appears to be virtually sunk.
We need a candidate, and I don't believe Biden is it.

(12,655 posts)i think he is part of yesterday, like hillary, i think bernie has a shot more than many think. i also would not write off omalley. he has a great message, if he can get some visibility.

(50 posts)Bernie has a *very* narrow path to the election, but he did break one of the key barriers yesterday - leading Clinton 44-37 in NH on a well-respected state poll.
More forthcoming *STATE* polls will also tighten up or give Bernie the lead. Bernie is very close in Iowa, and also very close in my state which happens to be a swing state.

(3,732 posts)that I desperately wanted to vote for the first female President this election cycle, but I can't vote for Hillary because of her failure to address "reform of welfare as we know it", mass incarceration, TPP, Third Way/Wall Street politics, "working white people" dog whistles, and even "All People Matter" at a black funeral. She's doing everything she can to make herself impossible to vote for if she wins the Democratic nomination. I sincerely hope she doesn't.
Bernie is voicing pretty much my ideal platform, but I still wish I could vote for a woman. Before he announced his candidacy, I wrote to him and asked if he would consider encouraging Barbara Lee to run and running as her VP. Looks like that didn't happen.
I've been very open about my "interesting" opinion on that on DU.
I support Bernie because I don't have a woman who is stating Bernie's platform that I can throw my vote to. That's the situation. But I still wish I could vote for the first female President in my time. Hillary is going to coast a bit off that sentiment from a lot of other women though her platform is against their interests.

(2,707 posts)he's been out of politics too long, and its not like he was a savvy campaigner in 1988 primaries or 2000 GE. He should've have thought he was gonna win a state controlled by his opponent's family. He's also not going to go against the Clintons, who made him into a national figure. Before the Clintons put him on the ticket, he was another Washington stiff and scion.
Also, seeing how a lot of people on the far-left have a problem with the Clinton Foundation, I bet Gore's connections with both Apple AND Google's boards would hurt him with the same people. And in the GE, selling his network to Al Jazeera, which IMO is much worse than FOX, would be problematic.

(14,733 posts)But the only reason to want Gore in the race is to try and draw off more Bernie voters and clear the way for Clinton.
And that's not 'among Democrats'. That's Clinton.
Americans trust Bernie, and can see his character and compassion.
