Blindfolded; swinging at a pinata with a broomstick. Flailing at every sound, thinking you are going to hit it with the next swing and spill all the candy. Your broomstick isn't long enough to hit the pinata no matter what you do, and everyone else is laughing at the joke.

Growing up in the wonderful world of Southern California though, I've been to literally hundreds of birthday parties, and what I described... someone yanking on the rope to raise the pinata out of the reach of someone in order to leave it intact for the Birthday Kid happens all the time.

I wish I could have responded to this earlier but I had a rough day, got a promotion at the END of the day, and spend the evening celebrating.

Boston is one of the few cities I haven't had the good fortune to visit. When I DO get a chance to go there, dinner is on ME.

I knew you were trying to make a point about the pinata. However, I focused in the invitation because I just imagined this excluded kid and figured no one should have that memory and only that memory of kids' birthday parties. I am so glad it wasn't true.

Boston is a great city to visit if you like history--so much to see-- and Cape Cod is beautiful. Cambridge is fun to see, too and Harvard is a very historic university. Ideally, you would do the sights in the city and end up on a beach in Cape Cod. You can see the sun come up over the water and you can also see the sun set on the water.

So, there you go. An invitation to an adult kid's birthday party, trip planning, a promotion and a celebration, all in the same 24 hour period. That's what I call a great day. I am so happy for you.

Well, that's original...

Would it annoy you if I pointed out that if I DO "vote for him", that doesn't change the result if the Democrats who don't hang out on political blogs DON'T vote for him?

Perhaps you'd be better off coming up with a convincing tactical analysis of HOW he wins, because I still haven't seen one.

Garrett78

18. There isn't one.
Thu Aug 20, 2015, 03:12 PM
Aug 2015

There isn't a "convincing tactical analysis" of how Sanders can win. Bernard Chazelle wrote, "America has lefties but no left." Until that changes, Dems will have to settle for neoliberals such as Clinton. Lefties have to be willing to lay the groundwork necessary so that someone like Sanders can become POTUS someday. The environment that will foster such a candidate must be created from the local outward; it can't just be willed into being.

I suggest getting involved in local projects of interest to you. Some examples might include volunteering with civil rights organizations, anti-bullying programs, union organizing, democratic schools or unschooling, co-ops, running for or working in public office, etc. *Note: I'm not talking about mere personal transformation (Gandhi never said "be the change&quot or promoting new age nonsense that has become popular with lefties. Nor am I advocating the creation of new organizations. I'm talking about joining with others to help bring about an environment in which neoliberals and neoconservatives aren't the only options at the national level.

Simply expressing opposition to lesser evil voting won't accomplish much. If you want an organized Left or an environment that can foster a progressive national politics, lefties are going to have to create it from the local outward. And accept that it will take a very long time given our starting position. As opposed to waiting every 4 or 8 years in hopes that this will be the year progressive so-and-so gets elected. Now, some reading this post may already be very active at the local level and I commend you (I sure as heck need to do more myself), but it's quite evident that more needs to be done, that "America has lefties but no left." Depending on your age, you may not see large-scale systemic change in your lifetime. And that can be demoralizing, I know. It's also not easy--you have a job, you have a family, you don't want to do even more work in your spare time. But you have to find a way, because you aren't going to will systemic change into being. You have to help lay the groundwork and - in order to get over the frustration with slow progress - take comfort in planting seeds in the collective consciousness.

25. Or even a "centrist"
Thu Aug 20, 2015, 03:27 PM
Aug 2015

Kucinich (the Sanders of 2007/2008) was once described as a European Centrist. We have a long ways to go before someone such as Sanders becomes POTUS. Until lefties form an organized Left from the local outward (start by taking over city councils, school boards, etc.), we'll continue to see neoliberals and neoconservatives battling for supremacy. If lefties aren't willing to do the leg work between election cycles and only get "active" during election cycles (mostly by posting on message boards), we can forget about undoing the corporate stranglehold.

Sanders himself said, "no matter who is elected to be president, that person will not be able to address the enormous problems facing the working families of our country. They will not be able to suceed becuase the power of corporate America, the power of Wall Street, the power of campaign donors is so great that no president alone can stand up to them. That is the truth. People may be uncomfortable about hearing it, but that is the reality. And that is why what this campaign is about is saying loudly and clearly: It is not just about electing Bernie Sanders for president, it is about creating a grassroots political movement in this country."

And, as Robert Jensen wrote several years ago, "No matter who votes in elections, powerful unelected forces—the captains of industry and finance—set the parameters of political action. Voting matters, but it matters far less than most people believe, or want to believe."

The REASON they believe the presidency has that kind of power is most Americans have experience with living under a dictatorship while they're at work. What their boss says goes and they seem to believe the President is the ultimate boss.

...I just respond when I think the message is wrong or idiotic.

That said, the graphic isn't the real issue. The real issue is the notion that "Bernie can win if we all vote for him". I've seen this thrown out several times, and it remains completely irrelevant, since "we" represent the most insignificantly small proportion of the Democratic electorate. For Bernie to win, "they" (the 99% of the Party that don't discuss politics online) have to vote for him, and none of Bernie's supporters have suggested a serious approach as to how he's going to reach out to 18 million voters without the financial resource to either advertise or hire full-time field staff.

It's a long time before the primaries and plenty of time to proselytize about Bernie. I myself have swayed a few people just because they asked me about my Bernie window signs and I told them what Bernie is about.

Maybe the effects of advertising are not so important in this day and age. Since Bernie won't do negative ads, he'd be easy to ignore in the constant barrage of advertisements. IMO, social media is going to push otherwise apathetic voters to the polls and catapult Bernie into the White House.

My wife and I do a lot of financial support for Democrats, and to be informed on the races I'm considering funding, I do a lot of research and data crunching. I have yet to see a hard-boiled explanation of how Bernie Sanders competes in a national Primary, let alone the General Election.

Have any of you thought about what kind of negative ads that republicans would run against sanders? They would morph him into stalin lenin castro and worse. They would show communists killing people with sanders smiling. These ads would be aimed at low information independent voters who decide elections. Where would sanders get the money as the goppers would spend billions if necessary. Remember the famous daisy ad against goldwater or the willie horton ad against dukakis. Think with your head not your heart. And trying to get this hidden because you love bernie will not solve your problem.

I will not to let republicans decide whom I vote for. That's thinking with my head. Thinking with my heart would be to say "oh no, republicans will be mean to him and that frightens me!"

Fuck that. That's just an excuse to choose the lesser candidate. It's almost a right-wing tactic itself.

Several different instances of it. It's only a matter of time before some campaign or SuperPac makes that into a campaign commercial.

My money is on an O'Malley SuperPac doing so. It makes he most sense for O'Malley to do it now. The only way for O'Malley to have a chance is if he is seen as the lone Hillary alternative and the person standing in the way of that is Sanders.

Once that campaign commercial airs, Sanders support will drop like a rock.

If the O'Malley PAC begins the attack, Bernie Sanders support will, indeed, drop like a rock. At the moment, their full attack is on Hillary Clinton simply because she's the one Democratic candidate they fear the most.

On the Republican side, you can be sure that Adelson and Koch billions will fill the airwaves, broadcast media, print media, and cable shows airing these tapings and quoting his remarks should he, by some miracle, win the Democratic Party nomination (which I highly doubt).

I stand on my prediction that the GOP would rather run their candidate against Bernie Sanders than against Hillary Clinton. Much like with President Obama because he's African-American, they have to be careful how they attack her because she's a woman. Demographics matter.

With Bernie Sanders, it's a walk in the park for them to run against.

My fear is that he somehow gets the nomination and then as your second paragraph indicates, the Repugs get to use the 90 or so days from when the convention ends until election day to blanket the TV and radio airwaves with video and soundbites of Sanders calling himself a Socialist.

I can see us losing 45+ states and a bunch more Senate and House seats in that scenario.

50% of Americans say they won't vote for a Socialist under any circumstances and you have Sanders on video on multiple occasions self identifying as a Socialist.

It's a pretty obvious line of attack against him. Some campaign or SuperPac is going to make those instances into a campaign commercial and it is going to be devastating.

They smeared a Silver Star recipient and made people believe he was less patriotic than guy that went AWOL from the TANG.

One difference: when they smear Bernie-- and there is no question they will, its in their DNA-- he won't become defensive, he'll say, "Hell yes I'm a Democratic Socialist, and here is why...."

HRC was inevitable in 2008 as well.

The odds are against him, the plutocracy will move Heaven and Earth to thwart Bernie. The DNC wants the Wall Street Democrats to remain in control.

But you never know, and if enough people look at this objectively, on who would work hardest for the 98-99%, he just may pull this off.

Trump's supporters are your more affluent Tea Party types. Even then, Sanders has a chance to peel off some of them by convincing them that banksters are more of a problem than immigrants. Clinton doesn't have a chance there.
