Since Bernie Sanders announced his run for President of the United States of America, his lack of polish has been far more endearing to the public than his detractors ever imagined. Hes not a slick baby-kisser; the man talks serious social democratic policy and stays on message with a self-possessed intensity. However, if Bernies impersonal style has given the impression hes completely devoid of sentimentality, Brothers and Sisters, let me assure you otherwise! In 1987, Bernie Sanders released a spoken word album of lefty folk standards, and it is badpositively Shatneresque, if you will.
According to Vermont blog Seven Days, Burlington-based musician Todd Lockwood got in touch with Sanders out of the blue to pitch the ideathey had never met before. At this point Bernie was the Mayor of Burlington, so Lockwood just called the Mayors office and left a message with a secretary describing the project. To his surprise, Bernie set up a meeting, later telling Lockwood, I have to admit to you this appeals to my ego. Originally, Bernie was supposed to actually sing the songs, but they quickly realized he cant carry a tune in a bucket, so they went with spoken word. You can hear samples of the results below; all I can say is that its good that hes never run on anything but the issues, because he is not winning any votes with his musical talent.
If youre just dying to hear the whole thing (for who doesnt require a recording of an old Brooklyn Jew sternly intoning the words to Where Have All the Flowers Gone?), you can actually purchase the entire album, We Shall Overcome, on Amazon.

(60,963 posts)that actually can be pretty good.
I doubt anyone will reject Bernie because he can't sing -- just as they won't reject HRC for the same reason (her voice was isolated one time when she joined in I think on the Star spangled banner) Obama, who is quite good, to my knowledge never showed that he could sing.

Music was a very important part of this movement when we started it back in the sixties.

(47,803 posts)Personally, I think it is more in the realm of joshing satire...not anti-semitic....One thing that's incorrect is that he was middle aged when he recorded it.
(Dangerous Minds is an, er, interesting website that is iconoclastic on many levels. Very much a loose cannon. Sometimes brilliant, other times dreadful.)

(154,021 posts)and I will leave it at that.
And now back to policy... urban development, lack of affordable housing.. yeah that's something I never expect to see discussed in a presidential debate. Hell, not even in a mayoral debate.

(135,425 posts)There are two fucked up things about that cheap shot directed at you.
Firstly, that the poster didn't even bother to click and see WHO said it, and instead, accused you of saying it and meaning...well, "something" that the poster doesn't even have the guts to articulate (death by dire inference)... and secondly, the cheesy suggestion via scolding that there's somehow something wrong with being old, Jewish and/or from Brooklyn. I guess a lot of people would take issue with the poster somehow insinuating that those three characteristics are negative.
THAT says more about the mind of your accuser than anything else.
Really weird, that.

(20,627 posts)That poster has referred to this site as a "cesspool" and was going to team up with a banned member to "take DU down".
Not to mention endlessly telling us they are leaving, only to come back.
I take everything they say with a huge chunk of salt!
