Vermont Gov. Shumlin Stumps For Hillary Clinton In N.H.

While Vermont U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders campaigned in the North Country Monday, down in Claremont, his home-state governor was stumping for his one of his opponents.

....

So far, Sanders hasn’t received an endorsement from any governors. Shumlin, who may have been Sanders’ best hope for one, stressed he still holds his fellow Vermonter in high regard.

....

But to understand why despite that praise, Shumlin’s not behind Sanders, it helps to know something about Sanders’ place within Vermont’s political landscape.

“Bernie is perceived by Democratic voters as one of them," said Garrison Nelson, who teaches political science at the University of Vermont. "But the Democratic establishment has always been hesitant about accepting Bernie Sanders.”

Garrison says the state’s emphasis on individual candidates over party labels is what allowed for someone like Bernie Sanders -- a self-avowed socialist -- to get elected in the first place.

But now, as Sanders moves into a national political arena that is dominated by the parties, his history of independence is costing him party support.

1. Speaks more to how the Democratic party operates...

Than Sanders himself. Instead of accepting Sanders, who shares their ideals, the party has distanced themselves from him simply because he doesn't have a 'D' next to his name. Shame really. But this is just further proof that a lack of endorsements has nothing to do with the candidate himself but rather an entrenched political machine that favors its own rather than the ideas it supposedly champions.

10. Maybe he thinks he can emulate Scott Brown and move to NH from a neighboring state

In his case, no way he wins the nomination. It is hard to believe that he is an asset to HRC in NH. Could THAT be part of why Bernie is beating her there?

Shumlin was quite unpopular with his peers in the legislature. He had a reputation.

have endorsed Bernie. And the contempt and dislike Vermonters have for shumlin is the inverse of the affection and respect Vermonters have for Bernie.

Cheating your disabled neighbor out of his property just doesn't go over well here. His endorsement may mean something in other states, but it doesn't help Hillary in Vermont- not that Vermont is of any significance.

5. Shumlin is far and away the most unpopilar politician in the state

I'll go further than that, in a state where people pretty much like their politicians, Shumlin is the only pol I've ever seen people openly despise. And that was true even before he cheated his mentally disabled neighbor out of his property.

But I don't know how much our NH neighbors know about him so maybe he'll be of some use for the Clinton campaign.

is as unpopular in Vermont as Bernie is popular. Never seen anything quite like it in the 30 odd years I've been following Vermont politics. The actual ouch from endorsements here was Miro Weinberger, Mayor of Burlington.

I say that is something a state or a nation cannot afford not to do.
