2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAre Jeb and his pals Condie & the Repubs planning an August Convention Surprise coup d'etat?
While this news about Romney's problems escalating with Bain is great news, it makes me worried. Especially as it seems obvious this info was going to come out and as someone said today, Mitt walked right into a major trap.
Mitt is becoming damaged goods, and getting to the point where he is going to go down to defeat in one of the biggest landslides since LBJ's victory over Goldwater in 1964.
The last few weeks has seen the Bain scandal blow up to the worst scandal since Watergate,
and new revelations appear to be coming in the days/weeks ahead.
In the last three weeks, one after another evil repub leader (and I lump all the repubs/teaparty/libertarians together as evil) have come out and word for word put Mitt down for the horrible candidate he is.(Even Jeb chimed in, and Jeb went out of his way to say he was not being vetted for VP).
And yesterday the Condie news tried to drown out (unsuccessfully) the Bain scandal.
Putting the puzzle together, along with the nauseating profiles being done on "what a great man Bush41 is in Parade magazine and other of the media stories on him, it is surreal.
(no one seems to mention Iran/Contra though).
Could it be possible, and is it legally possible that a different nominee will be named in August?
I myself don't put anything pass the real worlds evil-doers that republicans are. After all, for almost four years now they have wasted time and money attempting to make sure Obama fails, something no other congress ever has done.
Don't write off the Bush family. Keep watch. And hope I am 100% wrong on this.
But the last candidate to start whining like Romney is doing now, was Bob Dole, whom was defeated in a landslide by Clinton.
Be careful about a game changer.
A recent example was Arnold in California coming in at the last possible moment and stealing the governorship away (and had he been born in America he probably could have been elected President). From convention to election is less than 70 days.
While some may say shhhh, its best not to give them any ideas, I think the best way to stop surprises is for everyone to be aware of the possiblities of a coming surprise to stop it before it starts.

(23,671 posts)I originally thought they were letting the spoiled rich idiot be a placeholder this year expecting him to lose, but I guess its entirely possible they now see he may do too much damage to their "brand", and a hasty replacement is being prepped for the convention.
Im not sure that Jeb wants it, the odds are too long against a sitting President, but they could certainly put another idiot into the race while they (the neocons) wait for 2016.

(40,891 posts)That's the only way the floating of Condi makes sense.
That would mean Mitt is so dirty with his tax returns and offshore accounts that he's out.
Maybe it was planned to make the Bush name more viable

(23,867 posts)I guess that's the question.
I've been wondering the same. Could this all backfire in their favor. $400 million here, and there weren't spent to get Jeb in the White House. I don't know a thing. For all I know Jeb is less electable than Mitt.

(11,464 posts)Mitt Romney (lucky for us) is the biggest disaster since Bob Dole in 1996 and Goldwater in 1964 for the repubs.
Hail Mary's mostly fail bigtime. However, Arnold was the exception and his last day possible entrance into the race(everyone said he decided not to run, then sprung it on Leno) led him to his victory.
While I personally don't think anything will save the repubs and Obama is a sureshot, especially in the electoral vote, this might save the house for the repubs and then they will attempt in 2016 their comeback
(much like Reagan lost in 1976, and almost the next day plotted and got the nomination and victory in 1980).

(26,549 posts)W left office with lower popularity than several infectious diseases.
Jeb knows this. Jeb knows he could not possibly win in 2012. Jeb also knows that his chances improve as time goes on and people's memories of W fade.
Jeb is angling for 2016 or 2020. Getting crushed in 2012 would make it impossible for him to run later.

(14,881 posts)and who else could they run from their current clown car cast?
Mittens is their sacrificial lamb. They hate him, always hated him, but had to play along because of $$$. Now they're distancing themselves as hard as they can.
So he and Anne got "their turn" and the GOP insiders have probably been hard at work plotting the Bush III coronation in 2016 all along.

(22,000 posts)As I said in another thread weeks ago on this same topic the logistics of changing candidates would be massive. All of Romney's stuff would have to be pulled from campaign headquarters and subsequently any lawn signs would also have to be changed over in supporters yards. Ads, literature, yard signs, pins, buttons, t-shirts would have have to be printed for a new candidate. The new campaign materials would have to be created and distributed within at least 2 weeks to pull off something like that. Their convention starts Aug 27 and ends on the 30th. So buy mid-September all of that stuff would have to be done in order to have 6 or 7 weeks to run a full campaign. It's not impossible, but it is improbable.
