2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNewt was in my county the other day
meeting his buddies and talking about his second term
i felt he was a tad presumptuous
but arrogant spells newt and he pretty much showed himself as believing we in brevard county florida to be americas stupidist people
i have more or less lived here since 1959 and i feel i speak as an expert on the area
its a pretty backwater florida place where we are a bunch of happy yokels trying to get by
except for one thing
nasa
you can get a knowledgeable conversation on the space program from an 8 year old or an 80 year old
my wifes dad was a rca launch director
my dad was the instrument tech who mounted gauges in capsules
every waking monent of every persons day here, whether they plan it or not ,revolves around that launch complex
all our jobs and all our money dribbles off of it
every thing that is nasa related or space news is bombarded on us
constantly
its what we have
so if you come here and sit down in front of us and talk SHIT like moon bases
well...we will let you
but every one of us knows you are full of manure
i work in a very pub friendly workplace and newtie dropped a duece on his hopes here
i dont know which of the remaining dwarves will win but i feel newtie is not the florida primary winner

(18,657 posts)He insists private ventures will put up hundreds of billions of dollars to build these lunar outposts for profit. Needless to say, if big money thought these was a dime to be made on the moon, it would already look like Disney World
His stated intention is to defund NASA and force it to look for private interest to sustain the program. Bet he didn't mention that in Brevard County.

(18,541 posts)You'd fall for that, right?

(8,224 posts)Has someone resolved the little problem with cosmic rays?
Without an atmosphere overhead and a magnetosphere to deflect it, cosmic radiation becomes potentially a pretty huge problem with long term exposure. I don't think the lightweight materials we can reasonably send to the moon provide all that much protection.
anyone who knows cosmic rays knows they give you superpowers
how do we defend ourselves aginst these mutated superhumans?

(42,770 posts)is because you all know no one would authorize payment?
Are there any ideas out there on how the nasa program could be retrofitted.retool into
some other use/purpose? Hope that's not a ridiculous question.

(10,287 posts)we see no valid reasons to return at the time
unmanned exploration has yielded much more useful data than sending men there to play golf and pick up rocks in a dune buggy
dont get me wrong you write a check we will get you to the moon but we know its wasted money
as for the nasa complex here there are plans to turn it into a private industry launch site i do not know what the outcome will be
