My name is Austin Savanh, a professional wrestler from Central Iowa.
Bernie Sanders came through Iowas Latino Heritage Festival on Saturday and stopped to enjoy some Lucha Libre presented by 3XWrestling.
At one point, a pair of young women asked to take a photo, and Mr. Sanders politely asked them to wait until the end of the match. Super nice guy. Couldnt have been more respectful of our crazy little subculture.
He also posted a video of Bernie in the crowd, as well as the Presidential hopeful putting a fan in a headlock. The Instagram posts can be seen here and here

(12,704 posts)put a stranger in a head lock? In an age where everything is scripted including minor hand gestures this just is astounding especially when you consider that in regular social interaction physical contact is highly ritualized either handshakes, fist bumps, hi fives or slap on the back.
This sort of spontaneous rambunctious playfulness between men is typically restricted to sport.

(18,998 posts)Which makes him look more human and real.
Plus they both looked like they were enjoying it.

(17,656 posts)I remember when Steve Martin first started out as a comedian, and back then he would have a banjo hanging from his neck when he walked out on to the stage.
And he would start to strum the strings a little bit, but then he would stop and tell a joke.
And he kept doing that about 8 or 9 times, and he was funnier than hell.
But, I started to get the feeling that the banjo was just a prop.
However, later on during his act, Steve would start playing it and wow, it wasn't just a prop, after all . . . that guy was tremendous.

Plus he can do it secret, to avoid campaign finance laws, unless of course his mask is removed.
From that pic, it looks like he already has the fundamentals down. I think we may be on to something.

(271 posts)Wrestling fans are in on the act Fred. Yeah they/we cheer the good guys and boo the bad guys because that is what is expected. 99% know that the product is fake.
Wrestlers perform what is know as kayfabe. Everyone knows it is fake, but that is the character. Kind of like Hillary Clinton is a kayfabe democrat.

(33,688 posts)Vince McMahon admitted years ago that wrestling matches are "scripted, predetermined athletic exhibitions" or some such thing, and that there is not real competition as there is in MMA, boxing or team sports.
It's theater and everyone knows it. And some of us cheer the heels and boo the babyfaces, especially John Cena.
Bernie is a shooter. A real liberal.

They know it's just a show, but they tune in for the saga, anyway.
Fred Sanders
(23,946 posts)hate-filled, often racist "stories", not to mention the live blood and gore and misogyny on open display....or not knowing it is fake and not caring to know.
Going to fake wrestling knowing it is fake, but pretending it is not, is as bad as going to a fake university knowing it is fake, and pretending it is not.
Getting back to my original reflection.
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)Pro-wrestling is violent and misogynistic.
I have known (mostly) men who like it and it is very much like a soap opera for them with story lines regarding who's sleeping with who, who's in a feud with who and so forth and who's murdering who. It's really not that much different from most daytime soaps.
Fred Sanders
(23,946 posts)Violence.
Objectification of women.
Hatred.
Racism, overt and covert.
And then the audience is also part of the TV and cable broadcast.
All live and scripted.
So more like the Roman Coliseum Games, if they were also broadcast live in TV.
At least the Romans knew it was real and did not just pretend it is.
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)I have no earthly idea how he even knew about it. I certainly never watched it.
Luckily, as he grew and saw how violent, objectifying and scripted it was, he left it behind. He does still make fun of John Cena, though. It's a running joke between his friends and him. At least the only attention he pays to it now is to joke about how awful it is.

If you did something productive with your Sunday -- if you went to church, took a nature hike, composted leaves from the back yard, concocted an alibi for the cops -- you may have seen only the headlines about Hillary Rodham Clinton's "Meet the Press" interview. According to those headlines, she dismissed the unkillable scandal over her use of a private e-mail server as a "conspiracy theory." A sample:
Politico: "Hillary Clinton: 'Another conspiracy theory' "
The Guardian: "Hillary Clinton dismisses 'conspiracy theory' amid email server controversy"
Townhall: "Hillary Laughs Again, Dismisses Email Scandal as a 'Conspiracy Theory' "
These headlines are true, insofar as how Clinton used the phrase "conspiracy theory" as she answered one of Chuck Todd's questions. "She is now blaming a 'conspiracy theory' for her sinking poll numbers," grumbled a spokesman for the Republican National Committee. The "conspiracy theory" quote was even quickly tweeted by the opposition research wizards at America Rising.
What hasn't been mentioned: Clinton was actually calling back to something Todd said at the start of the interview. "I know there's always conspiracy theories out there," he said knowingly, referring to rumors that Clinton had sat down with him only after some subjects were barred from discussion. He then made absolutely clear: "There are no limitations to this interview."
Clinton agreed -- "as far as I know, that's true" -- and plowed through seven e-mail questions. Todd wound up the eighth question by asking whether the Democratic presidential front-runner could "respond to an alternative explanation that has sort of been circulating." Only then did Clinton laugh: "Another conspiracy theory?"
None of this will matter when it comes to the way Clinton is covered, and I already have designated a section of my inbox for the complaints that I am carrying her water here. (Why don't I work for Media Matters? Indeed!) And that's the point. The media's willingness to believe the worst about Clinton, and the long political history it can draw from, has been the single toughest external problem for her campaign.
