1) I predict that Joe Biden will not show up.
2) I predict that Bernie Sanders will embrace Hillary Clinton, while pointing out their different approaches.
3) I predict that the Establishment will give HRC a helping hand.
4) I predict that both sides will declare victory (tough one that).
5) And finally... I predict that Bernie Sander continues to rise as people get to know him.
Bonus: I have no idea what will happen, but that's part of the fun.
Anybody else ???

(17,796 posts)like trying to judge some one mental state from an on-line comment, that would be crazy.
Good thing no one around here would behave in such a fashion.
FourScore
(9,704 posts)so that it appears there is no difference between them. That is what Romney did with Obama in the first debate and it completely threw Obama off his game.
I also predict the establishment panel of hosts will try to anger Bernie, because he will be less likable that way, and Hillary will just smile and quip jokes.

(130,516 posts)The Hillary supporters will claim Hillary won and that Bernie came across as a grouchy ideologue. The Bernie supporters will claim Bernie won and that Hillary came across as slippery and dishonest. The O'Malley supporters will claim O'Malley should have won but the moderators mostly ignored him. As far as I know there aren't any DU supporters of Webb or that other guy. Supporters of all candidates will angrily claim the media are biased against their candidate. And DU will be fairly unbearable for a couple of days.

(13,985 posts)Just a gut feeling.
I think Bernie will overwhelmingly win the debate, and act like a gentleman
I think Hillary will lose many voters by not keeping her cool (I.e rolling her eyes, etc)
I think it's going to be a lot of fun and I am so looking forward to it!!
BTW, FYI, y'all, CNN will stream the debate FREE on CNN.COM!!

(40,416 posts)Since there is no cable TV and no broadband INet here, and unless the local ABC, CBS, or Fox network stations carry the debate, it will be totally unavailable here. (There is no NBC affiliated local stations here. None.) I have not heard that they will carry it.
I think I'll watch a couple of Hitchcock flicks, instead.
And, of course, I will login to DU.

(12,655 posts)you won't be able to watch it?
sorry if the question sounds idiotic. i am technochallenged.
longship
(40,416 posts)No broadband INet here. I only have cellular INet which is limited to the point that streaming video is not an option. The only other INet option is satellite, which is similarly limited download, or dial up, which cannot do video let alone audio let alone still pictures.
So, here in rural MI, no debates for longship.

(12,655 posts)i am guessing that there aren"t any debate parties or other venues where it can be watched. bummer.
a few suggestions if you are interested in following the action
david corn did a fantastic job live tweeting the gop debates, so if you can read twitter feeds you can read his. he updates frequently during a live event
joy reid also typically live tweets, but if she is covering it, then she won't
lessig who was unfairly excluded (in my view) might be tweeting or live blogging it
and of course, du and daily kos will i am sure, have running threads with updates.
if my blood pressure holds out, i will be watching and (like many i am sure) posting here. if not, i will binge watch walker texas ranger or battlestar galactica.

(40,416 posts)One of my faves ever. May make it a triple feature. The question is, which two Hitchcock's?
1. Rear Window.
2. Vertigo.
3. North by Northwest.
I don't think I want two Jimmy Stewarts, so one will be NbNW. And I have not watched Vertigo in a while, so it will probably be that one. But Grace Kelly and Thelma Ritter may push me to watch Rear Window yet again.

(14,177 posts)I am going to one even though I can actually watch it online via CNN streaming. I think the party will be much more fun and it's only about 8 people so I won't be overwhelmed by there being a big crowd.

(22,308 posts)Clinton camp will attack the moderators for unfair questions.
Bernie will be called a Socialist instead of being referred to as a Democratic Socialist.
Hillary will attack the (R)s over the Benghazi hearings (although the hearing is pure bull shit and should be shut down) and also try to dismiss the email scandal as also unfair and play the victim

(7,865 posts)Of course this would be stupid tactics on his part. Most of the Sanders supporters are very comitted and passionate. (which explains how a lot of them here are so vulnerable to trolling)
If O'Malley is looking for a path to victory Hillary needs to lose a lot. He has no path to victory as long as she is managing over 50%. What he really needs to do is steal second place from her in New Hampshire if he wants to stand a chance. He probably won't be able to do that in Iowa and I don't think it will have the same impact there.
He won't be taking second place in Iowa or New Hampshire by hitting Bernie on guns. He needs Hillary to take some damage tonight.
Cheese Sandwich
(9,086 posts)If he's trying to win then he would have to go after Clinton's big pile of voters, not Sanders' smaller and very committed pile.
But if he's actually there to help Clinton then his job will be to box Bernie in and contain the wildfire.
We'll see which path he takes.

(7,865 posts)Of course the cynical theory would have been that Webb, Chaffee, and O'Malley were all there to be potential veeps and were selected to cover whatever Hillary needed most in the general:
Chaffee- ex republican- bipartisan but honorable. Loyal opposition. He could discuss the failings of the GOP and why he left.
Webb- conservative Democrat to try to grab red state votes (this would never really work)
O'Malley- hold down the left flank and allow Hillary to move to the right if she needed to in the general.
But that is a cynical analysis that I don't even believe. I think each of these guys ran for their own reasons
O'Malley probably was looking at boosting his name for a future run. This was a practice campaign since Hillary had it in the bag back in early 2015.
Chafee might have legtitimately believed that he could make it though I think he was angling for Veep all on his own.
As for Webb he could easily have been trying to score the number two spot on the ticket as well.
Of course all this changed dramatically once Bernie stepped into the ring.
Cheese Sandwich
(9,086 posts)O'Malley's biggest reason probably is to get his name out there for the future: 2020 and 2024.

I'll probably at least attempt to log onto DU and if they put on a couple extra hamsters to keep the wheels turning, maybe I'll be fortunate enough to get a play by play account here.
Maybe I can get the thing on my phone with the Sirius app.

(1,681 posts)And the DNC immediately cancels the rest of the debates because all parties agree there is no point in continuing. On hearing this conclusion, Hillary morphs into a mystical dragon and grants Webb a wish if he can obtain all 7 dragon balls. Bernie admits he is really D.B. Cooper and escapes with the DNC's war chest riding a zipline up to a blimp while maniacally yelling "Feel the Bern" as his amazing pyrotechnic show causes Sheryl Crow to throw down her guitar in disgust and storm off stage, causing Martin O'Malley to reach down and pick up the guitar, raising it to the heavens, as a bolt of lightening strikes its neck and imbues him with the omnipotent power of the dead rock gods of yore, Jimi Hendrix, Ronnie James Dio and (the professionally dead) Billy Squier. Lincoln Chafee who always brings drum sticks with him no matter the situation, gives the 4 count and the entire crowd erupts into a 3 hour powerhouse version of Rock you like a Hurricane while Jim Webb ascends into the heavens and takes his place at the right hand of Zeus.
DWS cries the whole time.

(2,217 posts)My prediction is that Hillary will will be asked more questions and get much more air time than any other of the candidates, perhaps as much or more than the others combined.
And each of the Democratic candidates will make every Republican candidate look like a bigoted idiot.

(14,177 posts)1. Hillary will try to sound like Bernie.
2. Bernie will display some minor annoyance at some point and people will endlessly talk about how he looked like a crazed angry person for the whole debate even though it was a small flash of annoyance.
3. Bernie will be interrupted at least once. The moderator won't do anything about Bernie being interrupted even if he is interrupted several times.
4. Many people will say Hillary performed better than they expected.
5. Bernie will have the best ideas and that is when he gets interrupted.

(58,724 posts)I think the pundits want something new to talk about, and I think O'Malley will provide them with a new storyline to replace then will he or won't he Joe Biden storyline.
I see O'Malley becoming a candidate that is taken more seriously - I think Biden decides not to enter - and I think it becomes a three person race along the lines of HRC/Obama/Edwards but with HRC/Sanders/O'Malley.
I also think there will be the usual energy behind Bernie which will result in more critical coverage from the MSM (which will backfire).
The pundits will also jump on HRC for some line that "didn't land" or something like that.
lovemydog
(11,833 posts)will all do very well.
I predict the questions will be toughest toward Hillary but she'll handle them well.
I predict that I'll come away with an even better impression of Bernie than I have now. I'm most aligned with his policies, and I've been looking for reasons to vote for him in the primary. I won't be disappointed.
I predict there will be some 'groaner' type questions, but it's okay that's the nature of debates. Some of the questions are kind of weird.
I predict that every candidate will appear far better than any republican candidate.
I predict that afterward people will spin a lot of stuff that I'll ignore.

(7,865 posts)Hillary's answers will be smooth and carefully constructed to promise as little as possible while sounding as great as only dozens and dozens of media consultants can provide. She will not say one thing outside of her script. She will have a story or two to tell about some people she met campaigning in South Carolina or Iowa. It will be a lovely story but in the end she will provide little in the way of details.
Bernie's answers will be rough and sound fairly authentic. He probably won't get flustered initially though eventually he will probably get a little aggressive or defensive.
O'Malley will make a critical error in deciding to try to razor off support from Bernie Sanders by attacking him on firearms. But Bernie actually has been building an army of volunteers so this won't work really well. Bernie will respond with his D minus to F rating by the NRA with some kind of quip. O'Malley will also probably take at least one shot at Hillary's flip flops. Hillary will respond with something about how a good leader has to be willing to change their mind or something like that.
Chaffee will hit Hillary fairly hard on her authorization to use force in Iraq. He will have a pretty decent attack worked out on her on this. This one could actually hit solidly.
Hillary will respond with something like this: "We need to trust the commander in chief, I extended that trust because it is the right thing to do. I trust our commanders in the field. My trust, and the trust of the American people was betrayed by the Bush administration."
Bernie or Chaffee will rebut this by pointing out how and why they did not choose to go to war. I expect it will be something about the value of being right the first time rather than making the wrong call.
Webb will despeately hope that someone pays attention to him even though there is no reason in the world for anyone to do so. He will come to Hillary's defense on the war in Iraq vote and babble something about how "easy it is for congressmen to make armchair quarterback calls" or some such nonsense.
----
In the end everyone will declare victory. Hillary will manage to not lose points by absorbing more of the Biden support than her competitors. In fact, between the undecideds and the draining of the Biden pool I predict most of the candidates will get a small bump except Webb. Bernie and Hillary will maintain or go up a small amount. Chaffee and O'Malley might gain a little depending on what they say and how they say it.

(3,795 posts)Most of the coverage given will be on optics, style, and bullshit.
Very little coverage will be given to allow viewers to compare and contrast Clinton and Sanders on issues.
The MSM will do its best to downplay all of the policies and viewpoints that Bernie shares with a majority of Americans.

(9,841 posts)Bernie will make his case, reasonably and passionately, and with truth on his side. Hillary will make her case, and it will come across as poll-tested, rehearsed, and robotic. And a few percentage points more of supporters will erode away from Hillary and will drift over to Bernie...
