I think the "opportunity" meme (as in "think of all the great green industries we can develop that will provide jobs&quot is an attempt to preempt the right wing argument that our attempts to limit carbon emissions would "cost jobs" and "cost billions we don't have" and "crush the economy."

But I agree with you, "opportunity" is not the reason we should support efforts to limit climate change. Survival is the reason.
