2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumToday's BernieBash™ meme: "Denmark sux!"
Started yesterday, actually. All over the Internets.
Apparently, a strong middle class, worker protections, human happiness and shared prosperity aren't all they're cracked up to be, or some such thing.
You don't want those things, really, so please stop your flirtation with The Socialist, 'kay?

I'm embarrassed for them. Their desperation is showing!

(9,688 posts)I'm listening to Justin Trudeau now, and he's making a very good layout of what he thinks Canada is, totally refuting Harper and the neocons in his vision. It's good that he's laying it out so clearly from the start, now that he's in power.
marym625
(17,997 posts)Things move much faster there it seems. That's a good thing!
delrem
(9,688 posts)It seems to be more the kind of closed two-party cabal that's explicitly seen in quasi-dictatorships like Columbia, than an actual example of a democracy.
There seems to be something built into the very system, the overall organization, that allows for a cabal of oligarchs to play a game of musical chairs with the leadership, where only the cabal gets to play.
So you have this absurd thing on the Republican side where Donald Trump is the leading voice and on the Democratic side we have an anointed Hillary Clinton, with talk of making it a Hillary/Biden race - any other candidates be damned. Leading immediately, with no further thought or getting acquainted, into a GE pitting these two figureheads of the oligarchy against each other. There's no way to influence that kind of rigged system "from the left", as there is in a parliamentary system such as in Canada.
Hopefully I'm wrong, but it's pretty damn painful to watch US politics.

So because we do not want to triangulate we will not compromise?
Remember one of the biggest reasons McGovern got beat was because the prick establishment back then did nothing to help him win.

(10,565 posts)The problem is that about half of those "worn out memes" are actually big problems for Bernie. The other half are ridiculous inventions. How is voting against the Brady Bill something to be proud of and not a liability?
in_cog_ni_to
(41,600 posts)Sanders voted against the pro-gun-control Brady Bill, writing that he believes states, not the federal government, can handle waiting periods for handguns. In 1994, he voted yes on an assault weapons ban. He has voted to ban some lawsuits against gun manufacturers and for the Manchin-Toomey legislation expanding federal background checks.

(45,251 posts)A statement about and a list of the 10 happiest countries in the world, per The World Happiness Report, via a CNN travel article. I assume the list is ordered happiest nations first.
People who live in the happiest countries have longer life expectancies and more social support, experience more generosity, have more freedom to make life choices, have lower perceptions of corruption and have a higher gross domestic product per capita, the report shows.

(3,190 posts)For work. The first time I went to Finland in the late '90s, I noticed that there were travel agencies EVERYWHERE. They were as omnipresent as Starbucks in the States, literally every street corner.
I asked one of my working companions "why all the travel agencies?" He told me that people don't have to pay for health care, don't have to save for college, don't have to worry about saving for retirement due to a generous pension and have a lot more benefits that are publically funded, so people normally choose to use there disposable income on travel.
I immediately wanted to be Finnish

There will always be "Good Citizens" who can be brainwashed and controlled by propaganda spread by malicious wealthy private interests (whether they be priests, feudal lords, kings, fascist dictators, or wealthy capitalist oligarchs) and who will believe their memes of control, and do what they are told, like "good little boys and girls".
It's how malicious entities have controlled populations since the dawn of human history. Lie to the ignorant gullible, fill their minds with fear, and you can get them to believe and do anything you want.

If he is running just to highlight all the problems and injustices in the US, that is a different story. However, it seems to me that his supporters are serious about making him president, so you really ought to be encouraging him to do the things that people need to do in order to get elected POTUS. Like smile during debates. And not just smile at his opponent (as he smiled at Clinton----he gave the impression that the only thing he likes in this world is Clinton).

(7,865 posts)Is that praising one's own country excessively without pointing to examples of improvement working is that it ultimately only struts up the status quo in a haze of nationalism and foolish pride.
