I have not stated where my preference is for the Democratic primaries, however, I have NEVER heard Bernie give that figure in any public appearance he has made.
That is why one should apply appropriate citations, or this is just another my candidate is better than your candidate thread without substance
His view of Denmark was relating to Socialized Medicine, and education, not to their tax structure.

Of course it is a personal decision, but for me no matter how much I disagree with someone, I never put anyone on ignore.
I guess if it becomes too frustrating, or aggravates someone enough that it becomes unhealthy, that would be a good reason to do it.
Just my two cents that is all.

(115,579 posts)Oh, yeah. Nowhere.
Yes, he does advocate for some Denmark-like social programs. Oddly, Denmark and the other Scandinavian social-democrat countries rank consistently as the happiest countries in the world. Have you noticed desperate mobs of Scandinavians wearing their lovely patterned sweaters and clutching pots of lutefisk lining up to escape their socialist hellhole by seeking entry into the United States? Me neither.
But he has never suggested imposing higher taxes on the middle class. He has suggested higher taxes on the very wealthy, some of whom pay little tax at all under our current system. I have no problem with that at all.

I think we should look to countries like Denmark, like Sweden and Norway, and learn from what they have accomplished for their working people.
Top income tax rate: How U.S. really compares
At 60.2%, Denmark last year had the highest top personal income tax rate among the 34 countries in the OECD, an organization of developed and emerging countries. And that 60.2% applied to income over roughly $55,000.

(50,236 posts)He's said nothing about tax rates. He has said he'd like to tax Wall Street transactions and do away with money held offshore to avoid taxes and have a higher tax rate on people so wealthy they won't miss it anyway. He's admitted the tax rate might go up a little on average people, but it seems a fair trade off for single-payer healthcare, free public college, family leave, etc.
saturnsring
(1,832 posts)they'll say Bernie said taxes will go up and he said we should be like Denmark who has a 60% tax rate. he'll be crushed in the general and we'll end up with trump

(50,236 posts)Bernie has to do a better job explaining what "democratic socialism" means. I hope he points out some of the "socialist" things we already have in this country: Social Security, Medicare, the military, VA healthcare, the Interstate highway system, the local town snowplow that digs you out after a blizzard, etc. I agree that Democrats need to keep the WH at all costs because of the Supreme Court, but I'm not as sure as everyone else seems to be that Hillary can win it.

Remember that their equivalent of state and local taxes rolls into that. My top Federal rate would be between 60 and 65% so for that kind of return on investment I'm good with the high end of the "middle class" to be in the 50-55% total tax area (Federal, state, and local) and in some states that might be a savings over what they pay now.
I'm below the median but by the time all my deductions hit I'm down over a 1/3 and that doesn't cover any paid leave, education, child/elder care, much in the way of infrastructure, or thousands of potential post tax dollars in out of pocket health care costs and working longer hours with less time off to do it and some years I have to pay either the state or Uncle Sam on tax day too.
I don't think our deal is that amazing at all unless you're upper crustish or near then the scale of economy makes fee for service a small relative investment even while a tremendous strain down the ladder.
We spend about all our Federal actual revenue on the military and little value is returned once you get past dicey roads so automatically it is going to feel like money pissed into a black hole to folks to pay taxes.
I firmly believe much of the anti tax and anti safety net zeal would evaporate if we spent our money on that which is necessary and useful.
It is too easy to be all wound up for folks without a lot of intellectual curiosity to be herded by snake oil salesmen and carnival barkers into the bullshit that all those trillions were handed out to welfare scammers and layabouts since they can't even think of anything else it could have been spent on because every damn thing is out of pocket for them.
