She just can't help herself........she didn't talk this way at the debates......
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is trying to reach Southern voters, and shes slapping on a fake Southern accent to do it. Its actually pretty cringe-worthy, but her audience seems to buy it.
Addressing a group in Hoover, Alabama, Clinton tries not to ham up the accent too much, but its still present. She dropped the g from progressive present tense verbs, referring those in her audience as workin folks and loosened up her diction altogether.
You know, when my husband became president thanks to a lot of you in this room, I remember after that election in 92, him saying to me, Its so much worse than they told us,' Clinton said. The debt in our country has been quadrupled in the prior 12 years, the deficits had exploded. So he had to roll up his sleeves and work hard.
Clinton has a history of pandering to voters by assimilating her mannerisms to appease her audience. Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart mocked Clinton for faking a Southern accent earlier this year in South Carolina.

(27,247 posts)And I use the plural, because there is variety, sometimes even within the same county. At my elementary school, for example, there was a noticeable difference between the accents of town kids and country kids. And the country kids were more inclined to use "ain't" as an all-purpose negative verb, the past participle as a simple past tense, and "done" to mean "already".
So to me, Hillary came off in the video originally sounding like my mom, but then she kind of trailed off into a more drawly type of accent.
Saying that, the phony accent thing is pretty low on my list of things to be concerned about with Hillary.

(11,573 posts)There is in fact no such thing as "a southern accent." There are a dozen or so regional accents, all different. Hillary retains a touch of Arkansas, but she sounds nothing like an Alabaman--or a Texan, or a Mississippian, or a North Carolinian, or....
By the way, I counted six present participles (--ing verb endings) and she dropped exactly one g.

(2,197 posts)Don't forget that the woman lived in Arkansas for almost 20 years, you can't live in a place for almost 20 years and have an accent not become a part of you.
And with Southern accents, it simply doesn't take long to come out, esp. when you are around other Southerners.
Now frankly, this is a bit much. But I have also seen Hillary slip into what I call "her Southern register" when she's very relaxed or when she's very stressed.

What I want to know is why people here think this sort of crap isn't indicative of her pandering to the crowd.
It's repulsive.
If Rudy Guiliani went to a state in the South and gave a speech like he was from there, he would be pounded in to the ground by DU members.
This type of pandering isn't going to impress anyone, except maybe for the writers of SNL.

(35,075 posts)I think Hillary tries to project her voice and it comes across all wrong, and Bernie has an extremely thick, easily mocked accent. I'm from the northeast myself but Bernie should have figured out a way to tone it down into something more neutral.

(2,728 posts)And my parents were from s. Georgia and have southern accents. Years of vocal training (singing lessons) killed my accent and no one who meets me can begin to guess where I'm from. I can put on a southern accent, and maybe, sometimes, particularly if I'm surrounded by southern accents you might hear a hint in a word or two. That's what I hear listening to this video, a hint of southern in a word or two. I have other reasons for preferring Bernie, but this isn't one of them. If she'd would have said "shucks" or "gee whiz" or "never you mind" maybe that would feel insulting, but in all honesty, I didn't hear anything cringeworthy.

(151,269 posts)voting rights were spot on. She did a good job. Did I hear a southern accent? Not really. I heard what she was talking about, and I expect her audience did, too.
This is a trivial thing to use to attack the candidate. It's a waste of time. Try listening to what she's saying, rather than how she says it. She sounded just like Hillary to me.
Bogus issue, in my opinion. Completely bogus. Is it really desperation time in the campaign? I don't think so. Try some substance in your posts and you'll make much better points.

(13,006 posts)And I say this as as a Sanders supporter.
And you know, she spent many years in the south. Maybe she's just comfortable talking a little more southern, and either naturally does it or enjoys doing it when circumstance support it. Maybe she filters it out when on the national stage. So to the extent that you think she's putting something on, who even knows which one she's putting on?
BTW, Obama has also been known to shift his vocal cadence with the audience...
