This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by TexasTowelie (a host of the 2016 Postmortem forum).
When pressed during a CNN interview about why he thinks federal workers should be fired for not doing their jobs while he has missed the most votes in the Senate, Sen. Marco Rubio put his foot in his mouth and said that voting in the Senate is not important for a Senator.
n an interview that aired on CNNs State of the Union, Jamie Gangel pointed out to Rubio that other Senators running for president (Rand Paul and Bernie Sanders) have only missed ten votes while the Senator from Florida has missed 59.
Rubio answered, Well, I can tell you that in the history of presidential politics when theyve been running for politics in the Senate, theyve missed votes.
Sen. Rubio tried to explain away his absences by arguing that the Senate votes dont mean anything, A lot of these votes dont mean anything. Theyre not going to pass, and even if they did, the President would veto them.

(13,006 posts)but I'm glad Rubio is getting grief for this.
Imagine if everyone who thought their job was pointless just stopped showing up, and expected to get paid...

(40,891 posts)The Koch Bros are funding him, he's the best they've got for a "passionate" performance, he's relatively good looking, and the nut job teabaggers will support him. Yeech!
Should be easy to pick him off though since he has ethical violations in his past, and shady friends.
Who else is there? No one knows Kasich really, Cruz is a nut job, Trump is imploding.

2. Why bring that into it anyhow? Rubio is enough of an asshole on his own without the racist dog whistles.
How the HELL is "ay dios mio" a racist dog whistle? Seriously,

(22,271 posts)the OP used a Spanish phrase. Still not seeing the "dog whistle." IDK, maybe it's because I've lived in California all my life and Spanish is spoken almost as often as is English that I'm not seeing the outrage here.
tishaLA
(14,777 posts)ETA: You can defend this "Ricky Ricardo" stuff all you want. It's still distasteful and unworthy of DU
Le Taz Hot
(22,271 posts)Using a Spanish phrase is now distasteful? Sorry, you're not making any sense here. I think you're seeing outrage where none exists.

(14,777 posts)Would someone end a post about, say, Martin O'Malley with it? Conceivably, but doubtful
It'd be like saying' "Sanders can't answer a question about his NRA stance, proving what a meshuggah aldercocker he is"
It'd be antisemitic, distasteful, and unworthy of DU
newfie11
(8,159 posts)I don't see it being the horrible phrase that it's being made out to be!
tishaLA
(14,777 posts)Let me try again: "Sanders can't answer a question about the NRA. Oy Vey iz Mir!" That shit if offensive. So would "Oy Gevalt!" or other unnecessary Yiddishisms Or maybe a photoshop of him drinking Manischewitz (see: photoshop of Rubio with Cuervo, even though it's not even a Cuban product).
The fact that people can pretend this is OK, or attempt to explain it away, says a lot about the ethnic and racial animus that's opened up on here during the primary season. Seriously.

(40,891 posts)Plus more people should learn Spanish. Where I live it's more than 50% Latino so let's not pretend this country isn't gong towards being bi-lingual. TDU is totally uni-lingual. Since I speak Spanish I would like to be able to use it to express myself. I like to use it so people learn some words too.
