While We Argue about Democratic Primary Candidates,

we miss something very important about our presidential elections, I think. There is a very high risk in 2016 that we could lose control of all three branches of government to the Republicans. Look at the GOP Clown Car. Look at the House of Representatives. Look at the Senate. Now, imagine a Republican President signing bills from that Congress.

I've been reminded many times that DU was founded to fight Republicans. That was the reason it was created. Are we doing that right now? It doesn't seem so to me. It seems like we are fighting each other. Yes, we all have our favorite primary candidate. Mine is Hillary Clinton. Why? Because I think she has the best chance of keeping the disaster I mentioned above from happening.

If someone else is the nominee, I will work just as hard for that nominee, for the reasons described in the first paragraph of this post. Presidents have limited powers. But a Republican President with Republicans in the majority of both houses of Congress is a recipe for a regressive disaster on a scale most of us probably can't actually imagine.

We will have a Democratic nominee. That's guaranteed. But, if we split the Democratic Party by attacking each other over who that nominee will be, we run a serious risk of losing the presidency and still having Republican control of Congress. For me, and in my opinion only, that alone is reason enough to avoid nasty attacks on other Democrats. That alone is reason enough to throw our full support behind whoever ends up being the nominee.

DU was founded to fight Republicans. Is that not still the goal? Are we willing to throw the baby that is our country out with the political bathwater? I hope not. I hope we will come to our senses and have a lively debate about the primary candidates but avoid tearing the party apart in the process. That's what I hope, but I'm sure not feeling it right now.

There, I'm done...

If I cannot remain hopeful, there is no point. So, I remain hopeful. It's my nature.

I give my opinion about who I prefer and who I think will win. That's it. People will decide on their own for whom to vote. I'll be supporting the Democratic nominee.

Don't forget about the "press." And what about state houses all over the country? This thing's been screwed for a while, partly because of the Third Way, partly the Culture War, and totally because of the very things Bernie Sanders is unafraid to talk about every day.

Give me a President who says "oligarchy." Who tells the truth about who's jerking us around from the school boards to the US Senate.

Keeping the White House away from the GOP while we continue to sleepwalk along our neoliberal path is not gonna do us any good.
