2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo, Sanders wants to spend but hasn't quite worked out how to pay for it
I mean, he was asked a direct question and his answer was "anywhere between 50% and 90%".
How are you supposed to have a proper debate about the costs and payments for his plan if he won't give a straight answer?

(48,181 posts)Nor should he. The question was stupid and nobody else pegged themselves to a specific top income tax rate either.

(146,336 posts)tax rates. In actual fact, they have almost nothing to do with that, other than making suggestions and holding the power of the veto. Unlike many ordinary citizens, I'm sure Bernie Sanders has read and understood the Constitution.
Any changes in taxation must originate in Congress. While a President can call for whatever he or she wants to do, that is not something the President can just make happen.
Calling for specifics is a waste of time. Naming specifics is a waste of time. Until a President is in office and sees the makeup of Congress, he or she cannot estimate anything. And when in office a President has no control over what Congress decides to legislate.
One thing I can guarantee: no Congress I can imagine being seated will initiate an increase in the maximum income tax rate anywhere near the range mentioned in the OP. It's not going to happen, and Bernie Sanders knows that. No question.
