Haim Saban: I'm Not Suggesting We Torture Muslims, but They Should Be Scrutinized
'You want to be free and dead? I'd rather be not free and alive,' Israeli-American billionaire and Hillary Clinton supporter says in aftermath of Paris attacks.
"I'm not suggesting we put Muslims through some kind of torture room to get them to admit they are or they're not terrorists," he is quoted as telling The Wrap in a story posted Wednesday, "but I am saying we should have more scrutiny." Suggesting that some civil liberties may need to be suspended in the face of security threats, he asked rhetorically: "You want to be free and dead? I'd rather be not free and alive."

(32,623 posts)Remember, many of these refugees are fleeing the same terrorists who threaten us. It would be a cruel irony indeed if ISIS can force families from their homes and then also prevent them from finding new ones. ...
Americas open, free, tolerant society is described by some as a vulnerability in the struggle against terrorism. But I actually believe its one of our greatest strengths. It reduces the appeal of radicalism and enhances the richness and resilience of our communities.

(1,309 posts)Not too many trust her actions to agree with her words, heck another poll might come out or she could get elected and just evolve to his position of extra scrutiny. Her evolving is wearing thin with most of the democratic party rank and file, and her debate performances may be long on style but short on liberal or progressive values such as her opposition to Glass -Steagull as obvious support for the 1 percent and her tone deaf remarks about 911 resulting in her donations from Wall Street, her apparent attempted negotiation for her rich donors to convince the public that only an increase to $12 is the correct thing even as low paid workers fight for $15 nationwide etc. are hurting her credibility almost as much as her faked response to Bernie's more than polite pointing out her donors and the likelihood politicians often voted to satisfy their donors. She amplified what he said by her reactions to supposed questions of integrity. Hillary is being revealed and what she shows is not flattering. How much longer polls will show the public buying into appeals to woman kind to support her as a matter of gender, how much longer will we hear of unsubstantiated claims usually suspiciously made by conservatives that she was a good Secretary of State and not notice the more obvious results achieved by John Kerry, how much longer will we see her claim to be the the recipient of the Obama mantle and yet reject his more progressive ideas, and the list goes on and on, how much longer will we see h er with traitors like Kissinger and partying with race baiting republicans like Trump and accept she does not have affection for them and an affinity for their views on many matters. But hopefully she will be better known as who she is before the election to all the voters.

You stacked a lot of stuff in that rant but I'll address some of your comments in order-
RE: Glass-Steagull- Even Noble prize winning economist Paul Krugman thinks Hillary's plan does more to curtail the abuses that caused the recession.
RE: Debates: Her numbers go up after each one, so her style must be appealing to some of us liberals.
I prefer $15 but $12 is a good start, and more realistic nationally.
This one rich donor in the op disagreeing with her is evidence she disregards donors concerns when they conflict with her values. To assume everything she does well is "pandering" makes it look like she's being stretched into some inhuman, irrational construct of a fictitious super-villain. Let's try to keep people more life-sized.
I think what's been "revealed" about her is admirable.
Obama's not conservative and he says she was a good SoS, as do the scores of Senators, Reps, etc who have endorsed her.
She appeals to women because she is strong and successful and accomplished. To be the first woman president will be historical and inspirational.
The SoS club is small. I'm unconcerned with hearing her praised by any former SoS, even Kissinger. And Trump wasn't race baiting back when she went to his wedding. They have both said they were never close. I think it's very a very suspicious assumption on your part that she has "affection" for them.
And I wholeheartedly share your hope that she is better known by all voters as who she is before the election! I believe it will help her win.

(1,967 posts)A man and a party that pretty much won on the Donalds beliefs. They discriminate against muslims as a group, and don't allow most of them voting rights or even the right to live where the please.

She also supports extreme libertarian coups in places like Hondorus. Also Clinton and her husband have a long history of dropping the ball on professed liberal beliefs, like National Health Insurance and gay rights. They are very successful and passing their agenda, in areas where they agree with republicans, like free trade, and wall street deregulation.

(1,571 posts)I'm not suggesting we take billionaires and subject them to torture until they admit that their money is used to create unrest and suffering around the world for the expressed purpose of lining their own pockets. And I am not suggesting that the torture of billionaires should continue until they give their wealth away and/or experience the loss of everything they love, their history, their people, all meaning in their lives and be forced to beg for asylum only to be turned away by ignorant assholes who spit on them as they stagger away into the night. But I am saying its time to consider the fact that the power we give these rich bastards is as ephemeral as digits on the NASDAQ board, as fragile as an economy based on tulips. We need to ask ourselves how much is enough for any one human being? And take the rest back...
Tell me Saban, would you rather be a penniless pariah with the world applauding your slow spiritual death, or a man of adequate means who recognises his obligation to the species?
But you are aware he cannot hear you when his ego is determined by his wealth and not by relationships and concern for others. Erich From said this more than 50 years ago and numerous studies showing the disdain for the poor have reached the same conclusions since. Today the rich say they most want respect as if their continual greedy and succcessful pursuot for wealth over people has earned them respect from people who see them and do not like them because of what they do and do not do. Respect hell, they want the peasants to profess their superiority and natural authority over us as evidenced by their material possessions, something we have fought since we were children and read Robin Hood and William Tell and of our own revolution against the King and our Civil War and oppression of Black slaves. They will never get respect until they earn it by virtue and as the Bible says it is as hard for a rich man to gain entrance to heaven as fora camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle. Whether you believe in the Bible or are a humanist, most of us know the rich care too much about wealth to ever earn respect from those not of a similar mind, which thankfullly most Americans are. I would usually say you are wasting time singing to the choir but this is a great reminder why we should support Bernie. Thank you.
