2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders middle class taxes.
"Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent and one of the most liberal members of Congress, favors raising taxes for higher earners, but he sets the threshold much higher than Obama, at $1 million."
Ok, but this was in 2011:

Zoom ahead to 2015. Here he seems to favor Obama/Hillary plan:
"Sanders also is eyeing income tax hikes for the top 2% of taxpayers individuals earning more than $200,000 and couples earning more than $250,000 just as President Obama has proposed, Gunnels said."

More taxes on those in the Hillary/Obama bracket:
"He'd also add a 6.2 percent tax on capital gains above $250,000 to help pay for a Social Security expansion."

But now he also wants to tax everyone:

So Bernie has already levied higher taxes on everyone, and we haven't even gotten to debt reduction costs, which is needed because debt is the #1 reason Republicans are gunning for social programs. In a perfect world we would never have a Republican president again, but I'm not optimistic of that scenario.
So to recap, when Hillary says $250k we get complaints from Bernie fans, unless it's Bernie who proposes it. But tax hikes on actual middle class workers gets praise from Bernie fans?

(19,877 posts)He's all over the place on this. It went from taxing millionaires, to taxing everyone. I already pay high taxes. If my taxes go up anymore I have to move and take my kids out of school.
He's not honest enough to do that. Sadly. He knows he would never get elected if he was honest about how he would pay for all his pie and the sky proposals.
And frankly he knows he doesn't have a chance in hell of passing them, so he figures why be specific? Why be honest? Why take the hit politically for pie in the sky stuff that would result in a 20% increase in taxes since it's not going to happen anyway?
IMO he is one of the most dishonest pols to run on the Dem ticket for president in memory.

(2,760 posts)until he lays out the numbers on how his entire plan would work. Until he does that, he's just speaking in generalities about his philosophy of government. Which is fine, if he doesn't really want to be President, but just wants to "influence the debate."
Of course, I'm not a mind reader, but I don't think he ever thought he would even this far. But his plan, or lack thereof, suggests I'm correct.
I know I'll have Bernie fans upset at me, but I actually think what Bernie is doing is great. I just think many of his supporters have lost touch with reality.

(19,877 posts)His lack of any coherent plan doesn't stop him from criticizing others plans. At debate he said Hillary's Wall Street plan is "not good enough", even though Krugman praised it and he doesn't even have one. He called Hillary's tax plan "Republican-lite", even though he doesn't have one. And the list goes on...
