Pop sensation Ricky Martin is throwing his support to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton Wednesday.
The endorsement, first reported by Buzzfeed's Adrian Carrasquillo, came before an upcoming Clinton event in Orlando, Florida, a region with a growing Puerto Rican and Latino electorate.
"Our community has been continuously attacked by Donald Trump and other Republican presidential candidates," Ricky Martin told BuzzFeed. "A few months ago I raised my voice against Trump's hateful rhetoric and standing with me was Hillary Clinton. Time after time, Hillary has shown her commitment to the Latino community and that is why I'm proud to support her and to stand with her because ella está con nosotros y nuestras familias."
Martin tweeted out his support as well, calling Clinton a "Latina at Heart"

"One of the main goals of the Ricky Martin Foundation is to fight against children exploitation and human trafficking, a modern slavery which affects thousands of children and young people around the world. Knowing that the main problem is the lack of awareness of people about this crime. We have created an initiative that allows us to reach many people through his friends and contacts on social networks."

In fact, most with money, celeb or not, might be weary of Bernie given I truly believe he believes the rich are a big part of the problem.
I agree with him, BTW.
But your observation of the attitude of certain folks around here is of course spot on.

Yes, Hillary got Ricky Martin's endorsement!
, good for her.
I'd be a little more interested in hearing who Michael Stipe is endorsing, or Steve Earle, or James McMurtry- or hell, Jello Biafra or Public Enemy for that matter... at least, people who have a history of political commentary infused into the fabric of ther music.
But, whatever. Ricky Martin! Woohoo! He's certainly emblematic of... something.

There was a discussion about this on my FB page. A couple of people hadn't heard about Killer Mike (I had no clue who he was) and several of my African American friends chimed in to explain how significant he was. He's an artist as well as an activist and has a very strong following.

... to black people???!!
Even when Shaun King discussed how significant Killer Mike's endorsement was, the FIRST thing he said was that Mike was not well known. Every single article about KM's endorsement written by black people noted that he wasn't well known.
But yet non-black people keep telling black people how important he is to our community. My 22 year old cousin who lives in Atlanta is pretty "meh" about him and doesn't know anyone who plays his music. But I don't think that will stop the "he's really important to black people" meme that keeps being spouted from non-blacks to ACTUAL black people. For some reason, it is DEEPLY important for some people to believe that Mike has alot more influence and is alot more important than he actually is.
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)to them is at all related to his being Black ... as they tell us how important he is to the Black community.
In fact ... the get salty when it is pointed out that; but for, KM being Black AND a Bernie supporter, he would remain a DU nobody.

(6,499 posts)What celebrity endorsements do is to energize things within a particular camp.
They provide extended reach outside of politics.
It's an important part of building a winning campaign.
Martin, Perry, Killer Mike and so many others all help in this regard alongside elected folks and their endorsements.
It generates interest and news. You get folks of all age groups that perk up when they hear so and so is attending a rally - which in itself gets more attention because they're there.
It creates mindshare, which is pretty important in the art of politics.
But I keep seeing so many SBS supporters writing off this kind of involvement and how important and necessary it is that it reminds me that so many have no idea how politics and campaigns actually work.
Well said.

He also said/did this..
At a recent concert, the 35-year-old singer stuck up his middle finger when he sang the president's name in his song "Asignatura Pendiente," which includes the words, "a photo with Bush." The gesture last Friday prompted cheers from thousands of fans in the San Juan stadium.
On Thursday, the Puerto Rican heartthrob repeated his criticism of the Iraq war and explained his changed position on Bush.
"My convictions of peace and life go beyond any government and political agenda and as long as I have a voice onstage and offstage, I will always condemn war and those who promulgate it," Martin said about his action in an e-mail statement sent to The Associated Press via a spokesman.
Martin, like other artists, has been highly critical of the war in Iraq.

Tell that to those affected by his YES amendment in favor of racist the minutemen project.
I doubt any of them will call Sanders "Latino in heart, soul and mind"
Walks the walk? What was Sander doing specifically for the Hispanic community when Hillary -as a young woman- was registering Hispanic voters in South Texas?
People like Sec Perez, and Dolores Huerta know this, and that why they wholeheartedly support Hillary, and will work tirelessly to get her into The WH
Sanders didnt oppose a pathway to citizenship or efforts to boost border security. That chapter in Sanders immigration record reflects less on his support for the issue and more on his alliance to labor and key unions also opposed the 2007 legislation.
Sanders was basically one of our only allies
especially for low-skilled workers in 2007, said Ana Avendano, a former top immigration official at the AFL-CIO. He adamantly put his foot down and said these kinds of programs [allow] employers to bring in more and more vulnerable workers.

(9,967 posts)and who are still paying the price even today.
Tell them that Sanders was being PRAGMATIC. That will fix everything.
More likely he turned his back on the Hispanic population on a crucial moment, so now they will turn their back on him
There's a reason he can gain traction with Hispanics
Why should Latino voters trust you now when you left them at the altar at the moment when reform was very close? Juan Carlos López, panelist and an anchor on CNN en Español

(9,967 posts)feels detached from the immigration issue.
When your grandparents immigrated illegally from Mexico things were very different than they are now. Imagine how they'd felt if they had had a chance to fix their situation, that they came *thisclose* to come out of the shadows and live a normal life... how would they feel about the people who killed that chance?
Call Sanders Latino, Asian, African American, or whatever you want. The fact is that for 11 million + immigration reform *IS* their number one issue. These millions of people have family, friends, people who love them, who have witnessed their suffering up-close, and who vote. Why do you think Sanders is still polling so low among Hispanics?
And you didn't answer the question...what was Sanders doing for the Latino community when young Hillary was registering Latino voters in South Texas?
