Damn... Even Public Libraries Are Getting In On The Bernie Blackout - WisconsinWatchdog

Bernie Sanders group feeling ‘Berned’ over library snub
By M.D. Kittle - WisconsinWatchdog
December 17, 2015

<snip>

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Public Library is feeling the Bern over a campaign booking controversy.

Patrick Doyle, a Milwaukee volunteer with Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, is taking the library on N. Cramer Street to task for apparently allowing library community space for Hillary Clinton backers while rejecting a similar request from the Bernie brigade.

“Join us on Saturday, December 12 at the Milwaukee Public Library (East Branch) from 10am – 12noon for a phone bank session to help expand our volunteer team by reaching out to Milwaukee-based Hillary supporters,” the political organization stated on its Facebook page.

“Don’t worry if you’re new to phone banking, we will have experienced volunteers on hand to train phone bank rookies.”

When Doyle requested space for similar activities in support of Sanders, he was told there was no room at the inn for his kind.

“Thank you for your interest in the Meeting Spaces of the Milwaukee Public Library. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate your request to use Library meeting space to canvass Milwaukee. Please note the “Prohibited Uses listed in our Policy,” wrote library official Ahnong Vang Schacherer in an email response to Doyle.

“Prohibited Uses” include “Money-making or commercial activities including monetary solicitation.”

Fine, Doyle said. But the library, supported through tax dollars but operating mostly independent of Milwaukee government, cannot open up its space for one political campaign and not another.

Actually, any group doing campaign work at a public library raises some questions about taxpayer resources being used for partisan politics.

Doyle sent Vang Schacherer a response including two dictionary definitions of “solicitation.”

“Solicitation was their purpose, and MPL allowed (the Clinton supporters) use of their facilities, yet has denied my request for the exact same purposes. This is wholly unacceptable,” Doyle wrote in the email obtained by Wisconsin Watchdog.

“Whether granting the Hillary group was or was not a violation of MPL’s policy is immaterial at this point, since precedent has now been set,” Doyle added. “Denying use of MPL facilities to another group who seeks to use of same but for a different political contender is favoritism at best and demonstrates an undefendible (sic) bias on the part of MPL.”

Library communications director Brooke VandeBerg did not return two phone calls and an email seeking comment Wednesday.

Milwaukee for Hillary ended up canceling its phone bank event, “due to low numbers.”

The OP was about a Bernie-volunteer's actions, not Bernie.

Patrick Doyle, a Milwaukee volunteer with Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, is taking the library on N. Cramer Street to task for apparently allowing library community space for Hillary Clinton backers while rejecting a similar request from the Bernie brigade.

And you write he is begging to look - perhaps you meant "beginning", but were too angry to type accurately?

No frustration on my part - it's been one piece of great news after another for the Sanders campaign.

By the by, I just got home from a trip to my local supermarket, where I saw my first Hillary Clinton bumper sticker ever. It was on a car driven by one woman, with another woman in the passenger seat. And the name it called Hillary was one I cannot repeat here without getting banned.

If you are strong enough to see what the GOP is preparing to use in a run against Hillary, just google Hillary and bumper stickers. If you think criticism of Hillary's actions and policies on DU constitute "hatred", I'd like to hear what word you use to describe a whole variety of bumper stickers with unflattering pictures and unfortunate but exact quotes from her.

Dec 2015
http://www.jsonline.com/watchdog/noquarter/abele-cutting-checks-for-republican-candidates-b99314122z1-267868981.html

Late last year, he gave the maximum donation of $500 each to Republican Reps. Dale Kooyenga of Brookfield and Joe Sanfelippo of West Allis. Sanfelippo is running against liberal Milwaukee County Supervisor John Weishan.

Last month, Abele coughed up another $500 to Sanfelippo, new filings show. That puts Abele in company with Bradley Foundation CEO Michael Grebe, the ex-Republican National Committee general counsel and Gov. Scott Walker campaign chairman who gave Sanfelippo the same sum five days after Abele.

The donations come after Republican lawmakers helped Abele in a variety of ways. They pushed through a referendum to slash the pay of County Board members, backed a bill stripping the board of its oversight of mental health care and adopted legislation allowing construction of the proposed Couture high-rise development along Milwaukee's Lake Michigan shoreline. Sanfelippo, a former county supervisor, had his hand in all three deals.

...

Former state Democratic Party Chairman Joe Wineke put it a little more harshly to The Capital Times: "Chris Abele might be the biggest phony in the history of Democratic politics."

http://shepherdexpress.com/article-26264-privatization-of-milwaukee-county-mental-health-hospital-in-the-works-news-shepherd-express.html

The county’s Behavioral Health Division (BHD), which runs the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex, asked for bids on a 20- to 35-year contract to run acute care services for adults, teens and children in crisis. The county envisions “getting out of the hospital business” and wants to contract for services from a private vendor. The county’s current facility isn’t in great shape and is too large for its needs and the private contract is one way to provide in-patient services while the county considers building a new facility.

The proposal came from the Behavioral Health Division administration and has the support of Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele. It had little input from the Milwaukee County Mental Health Board, which under state law is charged with overseeing the county’s mental health and substance abuse services.

...

But the Mental Health Board’s first year of operations shows that the Abele administration and BHD officials seem to be blocking the board from doing its job as an independent check on the administration’s power to direct the county’s mental health services. And the public—including those who are served by the county’s programs—are rarely consulted or heard from as the administration goes ahead with its plans to reorganize mental health services and privatize the hospital.

http://cognidissidence.blogspot.com/2015/04/chris-abeles-monkey-business-at-zoo.html

Last year, Milwaukee County Emperor Chris "Boss" Abele devised a budget which was rife with privatization schemes and giveaways to his wealthy friends, including the privatization of the concessions at the Milwaukee County Zoo. The County Board wisely rejected this proposal.

The board's decision was well-founded as that the concessions are very profitable for the county. Privatization of these services would lead to a reduction of services and sending millions and millions of taxpayer dollars out of state.
