2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe story of Sanders will be he was a good man who meant well but couldn't win.
Sanders won't be the nominee, much as we may love him. He's a self-described socialist and would get crushed in the general election. He is not creating the great national movement he said he would. He is playing only to the far left base and little more. Where is the great BROAD movement? Where are all the people who never vote? It just isn't happening. He is only recommending government programs and government spending. Where is the private sector job growth plan? Sorry folks. I love the guy and agree with most of what he says. But he is 30% behind in the national polls, and he will not be the nominee. Most Bernie fans are fine with whomever the nominee ends up being. Sorry. Nice dream, but it ain't gonna happen. I would like to see him be Sec. of Labor.

(58,785 posts)a genuine run for president, let's not forget, he started with a great boost from the excitement Elizabeth Warren created and has not been able to build on that.
I think we all believe that if Warren had run she'd have had a real shot at the nomination.
The big difference is that Warren has proven that she can and will make big changes from within the system -- and Bernie has not.

(8,976 posts)In 1956, President Eisenhower launched the program that a decade later would be called Sister Cities International, a program still in existence today. The idea was to promote peace and understanding through connections between cities in the United States and, at first, Western Europe. The program soon spread. In 1973, Seattle became a sister city of Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, then under Soviet rule. Other U.S.-Soviet sister cities soon followed despite the tensions of the Cold War.
In 1988, Burlington sistered with Yaroslavl, a city 160 miles north of Moscow. That was the same year Sanders married his second wife, Jane. In fact, the day after they married, they headed out to Yaroslavl. So, one could call it a honeymoon, and the pair have both done so, but jokingly or sarcastically. The reason for that is that they didn't go alone. There were 10 other people from Burlington who went with them. It was a trip dotted with diplomacy, official meetings and numerous interviews. Not most people's idea of a honeymoon getaway.

(31,849 posts)Democratic, or other wise; he played to the entire Democratic Party; spoke to a broad range of issues; and, built a Movement that contained more than folks that never turn out to vote ...
Other than that, I could see why you felt the same thing about Candidate Obama in 2008.

Every time he gets labeled a socialist, he wears it with pride, takes 1-1/2 hours to explain it at
Georgetown University, takes it to Liberty University for good measure.
The OP is dripping with wishful thinking, and is way off the mark with regard to Bernie and his
chances at making it to the WH.

(57,349 posts)Aug 23: The VERY serious challenges of the Sanders candidacy.
Sept 20: It is unlikely that either Sanders or Trump will win the nominations.
Sept 26: This country will absolutely NOT elect a self-described socialist. Sanders would be slaughtered.
Oct 4: Can Bernie supporters comprehend why someone would prefer Hillary over Bernie?
Oct 10: Why it is EXTREMELY unlikely that Sanders can win the nomination let alone the general election.
Oct 12: Sanders sealed his fate this weekend on Meet The Press.
Oct 15: Both Hillary and Bernie did well. Congrats to both. Hillary will most likely be the nominee.
Oct 17: Hillary Clinton is a brilliant super-qualified PROGRESSIVE candidate who will most likely win.
Oct 17: Hillary is WAY ahead in the national polls, and America isn't going to elect a "Socialist."
Nov 5: FDR was the establishment. Truman was the establishment. JFK was the establishment.
Nov 7: A self-declared NON DEMOCRAT and Socialist will not win the nomination.
Nov 10: Hillary Clinton is the OVERWHELMING favorite in the party and will win the nomination handily.
Nov 15: Hillary will be the nominee. Bernie is a nice guy, but he's a self-declared socialist so he's DONE.
Nov 16: Hillary 63% Bernie 29%. And all the lamenting in the world won't change those numbers.
Nov 23: The attacks on Hillary around here are getting as old as the crust on Paul LePage's underwear.
Nov 25: All the anti-Hillary diarrhea in the world isn't going to change a single mind. Time for a new tune.
Nov 30: So many anti-Hillary rants. Such a galactic waste of time and energy.
So tell me, what is it about this one that makes you think we'll give up after reading it?
Some kind of magic ju ju that'll kick in when you hit #18?
Talk about a galactic waste of time and energy...

(11,366 posts)I have news for you: unless you're in the first four states to vote, your time is being spent focusing on these two big end-of-the-year holidays that take a lot of time to prepare for and require spending more time with family than reading about politics (unless you're a political junkie like we are on DU).
The average American won't be paying attention to this until mid-January.

(418 posts)In order to get his tax revenues through the house he is going to have to bank on his number 2 supporter Ellison who is a Muslim. Just on the face of it It is going to be a heavy lift to get anything through the house to raise taxes on the rich. Bernie's other endorser is a Hispanic. The house is over half Republican and their support is mandatory to raise taxes good luck
malokvale77
(4,879 posts)My post was about Hillary Clinton and a better female candidate named Shirley Chisholm.
Why are you going on about a Muslim and a Hispanic not being good endorsements for Bernie Sanders?
I personally think they are great endorsements, but that has nothing to do with my post.
In addition, your last line about raising taxes, tells me everything I need to know about you.

(418 posts)The post as I read it was about Bernie Sanders being a good man and I agree. having spent the last 35 years as a social worker working with indigent people I'm interestIed in someone w ho can level the playing field from the rich and the poor. I believe to accomplish this that a fair and progressive tax system needs to be in place. I think Obama did his best in an honest way to work with the house. it didn't work. I like Chisholm and her directness but this is going to take compromise and thought. Hilary knows like Johnson when he put through his great American society program where the bodies are buried
