Related: About this forumDNC vendor mistakenly allowed access to voter database. DNC denies Bernie access to database..
DNC blames Bernie Sanders campaign and refuses to let them use the database for now.
Yet the vendor admitted to allowing the access while updating.
Frankly I am getting very tired of the way the party leaders are shutting out Bernie's campaign.
I entered the primaries with a completely open mind about both candidates while still preferring Bernie. I am remembering now how the party managed to shut out any leaders who supported Howard Dean in 2004, and how our local party effectively shut us up.
Not feeling so good about things now.
The article has already been posted here with a subject line accusing Bernie of hacking. From the Washington Post
The DNC maintains the master list and rents it to national and state campaigns, which then add their own, proprietary information gathered by field workers and volunteers. Firewalls are supposed to prevent campaigns from viewing data gathered by their rivals.
NGP VAN, the vendor that handles the master file, said the incident occurred Wednesday while a patch was being applied to the software. The process briefly opened a window into proprietary information from other campaigns, said the companys chief, Stu Trevelyan. He said a full audit will be conducted.
The DNC has told the Sanders campaign that it will not be allowed access to the data again until it provides an explanation as well as assurances that all Clinton data has been destroyed.
Hell that could have been an accidental event with the window opened that should not have been.
I have a feeling the DNC leaders and other party leaders are heading toward the same lack of respect for the left, the populists, the liberals of the party.

(3,649 posts)But there is probably some campaign policy that says if something like this happens the guilty party will be fired. Whether the staffer accessed those files intentionally or not they accessed them, and that's grounds for firing. I'm sure every campaign has a similar policy.

(2,522 posts)I also agree that Sanders' campaign should have their access reinstated immediately.
However, I do think to be fair, you should include the fact that a low-level Sanders staffer did apparently access Clinton's data while this third-party breach was active. And also, it's not accurate to say that the DNC is blaming Sanders' campaign for the breach-- they're blaming his campaign for taking advantage of a breach caused by a third party.

(11,366 posts)After months of defending Hillary's unsecure private server that a junior high school student could hack, they're suddenly so concerned with a low-level staffer inadvertently opening a file that the vendor charged with securing the data accidentally gave them access to.
That the security breach was reported in 30 minutes tells me that Bernie's staff did the right thing: they used a zero-tolerance policy to fire the employee (which sucks, but it is what it is) and reported the breach. Who reports their own "hacks?"
If the employee was trying to access the information for nefarious purposes, they would never have reported it to their supervisor and the supervisor would have never reported it to the vendor.
The average breach remains on most servers for up to eight months before its discovered. This was over and done with in 30 minutes.
Now... about Hillary's server....
Remote-access software allows users to control another computer from afar. The programs are usually operated through an encrypted connection called a virtual private network, or VPN. But Clinton's system appeared to accept commands directly from the Internet without such protections.
"That's total amateur hour," said Marc Maiffret, who has founded two cybersecurity companies. He said permitting remote-access connections directly over the Internet would be the result of someone choosing convenience over security or failing to understand the risks. "Real enterprise-class security, with teams dedicated to these things, would not do this," he said.

(2,720 posts)I canvass, kid. It's blatantly obvious that you don't even know what that is.
Here's the thing. "Polling" all your friends at 1 AM in some college dorm reeking of pot isn't the same thing as polling actual Democratic voters, with jobs and who pay taxes, and who go to the polls. So remember, when Hillary steamrolls Bernie in the Democratic primary, it's not some whack-a-doodle conspiracy. It really is the will of the voters.

(24,411 posts)There are tons of polls float floating around, but I guarantee you that every politician who was interested in how they were doing in Iowa, was most interested in Ann Seltzer's Iowa poll.
She has an unparalleled accuracy record and an A+ rating from Nate Silver--a rating he's only given to three polling firms.
That poll showed Bernie within 9--single digits--and peak campaign season in Iowa hasn't even hit yet. Sander's recent Iowa events have attracted 2,000, 1450 and 1500 people. Hillary's last three events had between 200-400 people. There are red flags that this is 2008 2.0.
I'd expect lots of dirty tricks and bullshit to start hitting the fan.
This DNC stunt was concocted to deny Bernie the lists.
People...get to work for Bernie. Call your local offices. Call the offices with impending primaries (Iowa, NH, NV, SC). Do whatever you can. The establishment will pull all of stops, but they can't stop We The People.
Their media blackout of Bernie; their ridiculous rigged polls and their limited debate schedule is just not taking Bernie down. The Iowa Poll demonstrated that.
So get ready for more lies, set ups, bullshit and other games from the establishment who stands to lose everything if Bernie is elected.

(12,769 posts)During that period, the Sanders campaign discovered the breach, accessed the Clinton campaigns data, then called the vendor to point out the flaw, according to the official. The DNC has since cut off Sanderss access to the voter file until his campaign officials can prove theyve deleted the Clinton data.

(441 posts)As a database professional this story has all of the markings of a setup. If they do not allow Bernie's campaign immediate access to their data it would mean that the DNC is attempting to scuttle Bernie's campaign. If they do this it's Bernie or bust for me. They would be kissing my vote bye, bye for a long, long time. I simply will do not vote for a corrupt party.

(2,074 posts)Based on what I've read on news sites (not here), this is the sequence of events:
The firewall was turned off; the company alerted the DNC (not the Bernie camp - but the Bernie camp did alert them before of the firewall not working properly); meanwhile they discovered that 5 Bernie staffers had improperly accessed Clinton files. Bernie fired one of them, presumably because said staffer had deliberately accessed the Clinton files.
It seems to me that the only clearly guilty party here is the fired staffer who could not resist reaching into the cookie jar when the lid fell off.
Meanwhile the Bernie campaign cannot access the database until they have proven that they no longer have the Clinton files. I think we can assume that as soon as things are cleared up, their access will be restored.
So why are the Bernie people going nuts over this and make this somehow Hillary's fault? Can you imagine the ruckus if someone from the Hillary campaign had accessed Bernie's files? Would the Bernie people then say it's a setup by Bernie? I don't think so.
Keep calm and carry on.
