Why Bernie will not run as a third party candidate.

As one of only two Independent senators, Bernie as to decide which party he is going to sit with, and that party determines his committee assignment. If he were to decide scorch the Earth in 2016 and hand the White House to Republicans, he might as well resign from the Senate or join the GOP Conference because he would be persona non grata among Senate Dems.

I remember Joe Lieberman ran as an Independent in 2006, won, and was welcomed back into the Democratic caucus with open arms.

Or does that just apply to conservative 3rd party candidates?

I'm curious about something. If actively campaigning for the other party's nominee is insufficient to lose a chair, why should a third party run somehow be beyond the pale?
