Neither were laughing on November 4, 2008.

(24,411 posts)I live in Iowa and have been trying to find out how Bernie's rallies are going. The media is still blacking Bernie out in Iowa (although it is getting better). I managed to find some articles from Radio Iowa and smaller newspapers.
Here is what I have gathered about Bernie's Iowa events during the first couple of weeks in December. These are not all of his events. Just the Town Halls. Both Bernie and Clinton had several smaller-venue events, as well as corporate events, visits to thank volunteers, stopping by diners, etc.
Doesn't surprise me at all, that Sanders is moving to larger venues. Walls had to be moved at his Dubuque event to accommodate the RSVPs that were pouring in. His Waterloo event turned away people and it was standing-room only.
Hey, if you got it (throngs of supporters!) flaunt it!
So, I compared Bernie/Clinton rallies and their attendance numbers:

(12,126 posts)My husband grew up in Iowa and went to Iowa City for his education... and we have a lot of family and friends still there. Iowa is very literate. The farmers and general populace are smart. Not sure why they voted in that governor but he won't last long. They understand when they are being lied to, when they are being played. I am not surprised that Senator Sanders is receiving such a warm welcome. Thanks for the numbers! I found this to be very encouraging!

(24,411 posts)...and the fact that he is having 8 campaign events during the week of Christmas, is amazing!
I don't think Hillary or O'Malley have any events scheduled in Iowa for this week, but someone correct me if I am wrong.
Bernie is really building momentum here, during a time when Iowans aren't really that focused on the caucuses, since they are 6 weeks away.
I agree that Iowans are pretty savvy when it comes to politics. We've been through the caucus cycle so many times. We know baloney when we hear it. Some, but not all campaigns, fail to understand that. We can tell when candidates are being disingenuous and we also notice differences in media coverage, favoritism, that sort of thing.
The Black and Brown Forum was completely overhauled this year, for the first time ever. It had always been a debate, with the candidates on stage together. Both Bernie and MOM fought to have it remain as a debate, to honor Iowa traditions. Hillary didn't fight. So--for the first time ever--one of our cherished traditions will watered down into a meaningless joke. Each candidate will speak alone at a podium. Oh joy. How revolutionary! Politicians giving speeches.
First time, since 1984. And we all know why the DNC is not allowing this debate to move forward. Because they continue to protect Hillary's inevitability nut. They don't want it washing away into the Iowa cornfields.
Iowans wil notice this. And when this ridiculous version of the Black and Brown forum happens on Jan 11, Iowans will notice, for sure.

Surely that says something important.

(9,841 posts)Sure they may not go Hillary's rallies, they may not wear buttons, they may not put bumper stickers on their cars. They of course never vote in those dreaded online polls. Even if there's zero evidence of enthusiasm for her in the real world, Hillary supporters can sleep at night knowing how well she does in those "scientific" landline polls.

(19,537 posts)In normal primary elections, he'd get a percentage of the votes not going to either Clinton or Bernie.
But in a caucus, people are in a room together looking to have their votes become "viable" as a part of a group of enough voters that they can have a representative that goes on to the state convention to represent them.
That means there's a lot of dickering, depending on the sizes of these groups to recruit voters of other candidates to join together for "the common good". You could get a caucus group where you have two roughly the same sized group of voters of both Hillary and Bernie voters that both need an additional voter or two to be viable to have a representative. I predict that O'Malley supporters would be more apt to either join a Bernie group of supporters to support Bernie, or if there are enough of them to have an "undecided" representative, within a group where you have a rep selected that though committed as undecided, has a leaning towards Bernie if the majority of voters in that group are Bernie supporters.
I think that Bernie may profit more from the mechanics of the way caucuses work with O'Malley supporters I think more having similar concerns that Bernie supporters do than Hillary supporters do, and in this election, the groups supporting Bernie will be a lot larger in terms of relative size versus O'Malley groups than say Obama groups were with Edwards' supporters then. I'm guessing that those mechanics also helped Edwards get in second instead of Hillary in the Iowa caucuses then too, when Obama and Edwards' supporters had more in common with each other in terms of their beliefs, positions, etc.

(39,215 posts)was in a home and there were only about 10 of us there. It was a really in depth discussion. I really enjoyed it. I also attended a bigger caucus in MN several years ago and there were even some real arguing going on.

(24,411 posts)that I listed, in Dubuque, Waterloo and Mt Vernon--are in Eastern Iowa.
Those areas are more liberal parts than the Western part. But they are not liberal strongholds. As you said, western Iowa is King/Ernst country--and to say that it is conservative is an understatement. It's a whole other planet.
Dubuque is fairly conservative, as there is very large percentage of Catholics who live there. However, there are many Democrats and a large number of working-class folks. It's a relatively small city (55,000 or so).
Waterloo is bigger and is a college town (home to the University of Northern Iowa with 20,000 students). Bernie's rally was held during finals week, and he still blew the house down.
Also of interesting--Bernie has EIGHT events in Iowa this week--the week of Christmas. Most of them are in Western Iowa, in King/Ernst territory. I am amazed that Bernie is tackling this western part of the state so hard. He had rallies in Council Bluffs and other western Iowa cities earlier in the year and they were very well-attended. Standing room only.
Will be interesting to see how those crowd numbers are this week with these Bernie western Iowa events.

(19,537 posts)It will either support the biggest Democratic population state, or the most important caucus state depending on who wins, and an Iowa win there would be the first since the year I was born last century.

After all Trump and I believe one or two other Republicans like Fiorina did go to the Iowa/Iowa State game earlier this year in Ames.

Win the damn Holiday Bowl against USC too for the Big Ten! I went there when Iowa played BYU that finished in a damn tie game many years back before we had overtime periods.
I'll probably have to find time to go down there to bury my mom's remains there next to my dad in the coming month or so too. It's been a nightmare of a year for me and my family lately. A Rose Bowl win would help lighten the mood a bit. Wish I could have been traveling down to California for that instead.

(4,450 posts)Losing parents is a tough, tough thing. Doesn't matter what age it happens. I sincerely hope that your family is able to heal and that 2016 is a happier year for you
Although football games are unimportant in comparison to family, I now hope even just a little more that your Hawkeyes win. I think they will, too. That defense is as tough as they come (obviously I'm in a position to know seeing as how we couldn't get into the end zone against you in our own house) and you've got enough offense to put up the 20 or so points I think it will take to win. Obviously I'm hoping we can take care of USC too. And, I remember that Iowa-BYU Holiday bowl. So does our AD and former coach, Barry Alvarez, who was Hayden Fry's linebacker coach back then.

(13,326 posts)I don't see it a likely scenario that Iowans would suddenly warm up to her so much. I don't think she has that amount of support. Hillary fans are hard to spot in the wild. I think many people will be surprised when caucuses conclude on Feb. 1.
