Which SIDE Are You On? Third Way (Hillary) vs. FDR (Bernie)

Richard Eskow, Bernie Sanders Campaign/The Zero Hour joins Thom. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders made sure that the differences in their policies are clear to voters - but they also made it clear why any Democrat would be better than any Republican.

his progressive, anti-fascist New Deal policies.

A whole lot of center right Dems, who don't even understand their own beliefs that place them in the center-right of the political spectrum, and who grew up in the Reagan/Limbaugh era, are completely ignorant of both US and Democratic party history and constantly parrot RW talking points about FDR.

Roosevelt's New Deal programs focused on job creation through public works projects as well as on social welfare programs such as Social Security. It also included sweeping reforms to the banking system, work regulation, transportation, communications, and stock markets, as well as attempts to regulate prices. His policies soon paid off by uniting a diverse coalition of Democratic voters called the New Deal coalition, which included labor unions, southerners, minorities (most significantly, Catholics and Jews), and liberals. This united voter base allowed Democrats to be elected to Congress and the presidency for much of the next 30 years.

We've had a conservative democrat as president for the last seven years; how has that worked out? I'm not necessarily knocking Obama, he's had an obstructionist congress to deal with. What we need is a candidate that will motivate people to show up to the voting booth. That will help us down ticket and will gain us more seats in the House and Senate. This is the only way we will see any progressive change in the short term.

...and if you look at history an "FDR" candidate is very rare. A complete gift.

I am so grateful that we have an FDR-like candidate in Bernie Sanders. I had almost given up hope for our country and there were times I worried about the kind of world my children would experience. It's damn frightening, given the neocon agenda, the corporate corruption that has swallowed our government--because corrupt politicians take their money.

Then, Bernie comes out of nowhere and says that he will run.

We are all so lucky. This nation is so lucky, that Sanders would agree to take on such powerful, corrupt interests in this country.

He's a hero in my book.

We all need to not only support him, but work hard for his campaign. He can't do this alone.

The stakes have never been so high. Corruption has permeated both parties. Bernie is our last hope.
