2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMy Report from the Feel the Bern Rose Parade March!!! (pic heavy)
Finally able to post this... I was so exhausted afterwards from not sleeping enough the last two nights and walking 7 miles and hanging with some people I met there afterwards that I came home, ate and fell asleep on the couch watch local news. Not before seeing the local ABC news cover the Berners though!!!
Just over 300 people RSVP'd to the event. We met at a park near the beginning spot of the parade. There was some prep going on, decorating the small float, practicing a song a couple guys were going to sing during the march and then a rally.
The Bernie Sanders campaign endorsed this event and sent a representative, Becky Bond, to speak at the rally. Here is a link about her: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/bernie-sanders-becky-bond_5617c573e4b0e66ad4c75d6b
It was really incredible to do this march. It made me feel so happy. What a great idea! And there was still thousands of people there since we were right behind the parade and they saw us and were mostly receptive to us. We got a ton of high fives from those right up at the street and got some shouts from people up in their houses at the beginning of the route and then from people up in bleachers later on. RVs were honking their horns and some people joined us along the way so our numbers grew!
So it was the parade, then tow trucks then a couple trucks with sheriff dept officers then us. Well there were a few religious fanatics at the very front as you'll see in a couple of the pics. I saw one of the officers taking video of us with his cell phone at one point!
Oh yeah, there were a ton of Iowans there since Iowa was playing in the Rose Bowl so I was making a point of yelling "Go Iowa!" when I passed them. One time there was a woman in full Iowa clothing who yelled out asking if someone had a button for her. Immediately several people handed her a button and some bumper stickers. And throughout the parade we had small flyers that we were handing out to people as we walked by.
I can't tell you how great it felt to have so many people yelling Bernie back to us and "Feel the Bern". I really think this is going to happen. More now than ever. The people LOVE Bernie! They lit up smiling and cheering!
And as I briefly mentioned above, the local Los Angeles ABC news covered this! It was short but sweet and they showed video. So that's cool!
So on to the pics (all take by me but I'm going to find and add one that's from high up so you can get the perspective of what people were seeing)...
I got there around 7:30am, my view upon arriving:
T-SHIRTS THEY GAVE OUT:
THE FLOAT BEING DECORATED PLUS OTHER RANDOM PICS:
TONY TIG BEING INTERVIEWED:
(he performed his Bernie song at the rally with his sister)
RALLY BEFORE HEADING OUT TO PARADE:
BECKY BOND - SANDERS CAMPAIGN REPRESENTATIVE - SPEAKING AT RALLY:
THEN WE HEADED OUT TO GET BEHIND THE END OF THE PARADE.
On our way out there were three people dressed in what appeared to be Native American or Central American attire drumming and burning sage (?) on opposite sides of the street as we walked between them to get to the parade:
NOW ON TO THE PARADE!!!
LOOK AT THE CROWDS THAT SAW US, AND THERE WERE ABOUT A DOZEN OF BLEACHERS LIKE THIS PLUS AREAS WHERE IT WAS JUST PEOPLE ON THE SIDEWALK. IT WAS AMAZING!!!
A BERNIE SUPPORTER CHATTING UP AN OFFICER, THEY WERE SMILING AND LAUGHING WHILE TALKING:
Thanks for checking this out. If you haven't gotten involved I highly recommend it. It will make you feel so good!!!
Here's a pic I found that's the view of our group from higher up:

(19,926 posts)Yeah, it was. I don't think I'll be able to talk over the weekend after chanting so much!
I'm going to cross post this in the Bernie Group and elsewhere and then hit the hay!
I'm so glad you were there as well cuz I know how good it made me feel and I'm sure it did the same to you! I'm more confident than ever after today.

(50,983 posts)See how nice Bernie supporters are? We like ze doggies!
The Iowa players were so distracted thinking only about getting back to Iowa and voting for Bernie that they allowed the Cardinal to destroy them in the first half.

(19,537 posts)... with this t-shirt that's likely going back in to the closet for a long while after yesterday's mess of a football game.
Was hoping to recruit some fellow Iowans to help with a GOTV effort for the caucuses here, but Iowa fans were distracted with the game and not in a very great mood to do other things then.

(50,983 posts)Sometimes teams are at a low ebb. When those worlds collide it can get ugly. I have no worldly explanation for it. Obviously Stanford isn't as good as they looked and Iowa isn't as bad.
I guess that is why we like football because there are so many tiny variations.

(22,271 posts)OMG! That looks like so much fun! They were buzzing about this on Slack and I saw it on the Events page as well. You guys did SO GOOD!!!! Of course, national media didn't cover it (I was hoping to catch at least a glimpse of you guys but the last thing we saw broadcast was the tow trucks) so thanks so much for this!

(19,926 posts)Carlos Marroquin organized the even and I heard he was big in the Occupy movement out here. And contrary to every thing you hear about Occupy and Bernie supporters just being kids, he is no spring chicken. He is serious about working to better our country.
I figured national media wouldn't cover it. I was happy to have seen it on the local news. Although I went to the local ABC news website and saw clips for all the other stories I had been seeing on TV but not the Bernie one. Hm...

That's what made this so great, we had an audience! We weren't just out at a protest where you hope people pay attention, the people were already there and they were watching us!

(598 posts)It caught me by surprise when I read about it last night. At the Rose Bowl Parade!
I think it was a great idea.
I noticed a lot of women in the photos. A lot of older folks, as well. Great enthusiasm!
Bernie all the way!

(12,769 posts)I was in the Bernie march. It was a lot of fun. The Bernie events are always exhilarating. We really need phone banking volunteers now too.

(6,282 posts)I'm planning on going to the next phone bank that gets organized. I just returned from christmas break (school).
Or if you're in the area and want to phone bank that would be grand.

(19,926 posts)Imo, most people just watched, we had a lot of enthusiastic shouts and cheers and waves and only a few naysayers and those were people who yelled "Trump" or "socialist" so we're not getting them anyway.

(34,103 posts)Thank you for doing this, thank you for reporting it and thank you for the photos! It does feel good to work on a campaign that you believe in doesn't it? It is just the best. I have been parts of those that lost and those that won. It feels better when you win but still feels good even if you lose because you did good work. I am feeling quite positive about this campaign right now. I have heard from only 2 people who are from Hillary among my friends, my husbands friends, relatives and my sons and their large circle of friends. Although that is not enough to make too much of a difference it sure trends.
YAY for you and your Bernie group. Nicely done.
