Help me figure out this "Public Lands" Stuff

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by tammywammy (a host of the 2016 Postmortem forum).

This link helps some Public Land but I am still confused about the different types of government and how they were acquired...

The ranchers, and I use the term loosely keep saying the government took their land away. How could they have owned government land?

Did the government take away their annual grazing rights? That definitely not ownership of the land.

the land for grazing. However, drilling for oil is another matter altogether.
In theory, the land is owned by the taxpayers.

But the ranchers never owned the land. And the state of Oregon never did. They're making stuff up as they go along.

General Discussion Politics is generally reserved for Clinton/Sanders/O'Malley election-related stuff.
General Discussion is better for this kind of thread, along with anything that isn't Democratic 2016 election-related.

I wasn't trying to be a rule nag. I've just seen some good discussions get closed that way.

I think that is right.
They can't run cattle on Malheur National Wildlife Refuge Land.
And they can't run their cattle on BLM land for free.
