There is an election that is getting minimal coverage nationally, yet affects the US in monumental ways. VA’s 7th district, current home of Eric Cantor, is being contested and has real potential.

Cantor is one of the most (if not the most) destructive people in Congress. He is the VOICE of the austerity movement in the US. He fights for policies that end any and every social safety net, healthcare program, and equal rights that we and our ancestors have fought so very hard for. If Cantor had his way there would be no social security, no Medicare, and women would be back in the kitchen barefoot treated as property.

I’ve been told again and again that it’s Congress that stands in the way of our needs and desires that we and team Obama fight for.

I think I’m preaching to the choir here, but we’ve been having trouble getting this message out:

Cantor won his first election in 2000 with 69% of the vote. That popularity rose to 75% of the vote in 2004. Since then, the numbers have fallen until 2010, the year of the bagger, when he received only 59% of the vote. Only 59% in what was the bagger movement and referendum on Obama!

Since the 2010 election we have had a destructive earthquake smack in the middle of the district. His answer was any aid should be balanced with equal cuts to social programs first. We have had the transvaginal ultrasound bill passed with his cheering and blessing. Cantor fought the ACA which will save district 7 constituents millions in drug costs alone in the next decade. The overall positive view of congress is hovering around 10% possibly even lower here in the 7th.

Cantor is in the weakest position he’s ever been in. The people of district 7 are pissed. I’ve met independents that say anyone but Cantor. I’ve met countless women that are furious with his positions. I’ve met lifelong Republicans that say the gridlock must end, it’s time for change. Cantor has even agreed to a debate, an unprecedented move.

Wayne Powell is challenging Cantor in this year’s election. I’ve been to meet the man personally and if he believes half of what he says, he’s bluer than most of the Dems we currently have in Congress.

Just because you don’t live in or near VA’s 7th district, doesn’t mean you can’t help us remove Cantor. Here are some ways you can help. If you’ve gotten this far into the post maybe you can go a little further. I would love additional ideas to add to the list!

I really hate putting this first. To be perfectly honest I don’t have much money to contribute to any campaign myself. However, it’s a fact of life that campaigns take money and a lot of it. Maybe you can’t donate, but you know someone else who is looking for races to donate to. Maybe you have $10 burning a hole in your pocket. Either way, the campaign needs additional funding. Getting national attention from blue friendly media sources could help enormously. It could help exponentially with every form of help that we’re asking for here in the 7th. Even simply emailing a link to this thread to the media could help. If they hear from enough of us, they might look into additional coverage. There is also a debate between Cantor and Powell coming up (more info to follow). Getting highlights of this debate televised is critical. The campaign is currently working with groups out of state that want to set up phone banking. Door to door canvassing just isn’t really possible for much of the 7th district, so they will be relying heavily on phone banking. If you have a group of people that want to set up shop to fight Cantor through phone banking PM me and I can put you in touch with the proper people to make that happen.

Just kicking the thread will help get more eyeballs on this important race. With Cantor it’s not just a matter of the district, it’s a matter of the nation as a whole. Cantor wants to destroy YOUR life, regardless of where you live.

I’ve been told countless times here on DU and other sites that it’s Congress, not Obama that hinders our progress as a nation. It is true. We have a real chance of dethroning one of the most destructive and powerful Republicans in Congress.

While I don't rely heavily on polling, I would like to see some numbers.

Powell is the first serious contender Cantor has had. Previous attempts to dethrone Cantor have drawn at least 34%, but that was with literally no money at all. Powell is gaining serious traction and recognition here in VA's 7th. He also has a mini war chest of over 500k, which is more than 3 times any previous candidate.

Look for more posts on the Powell/Cantor from myself and elleng in the near future. There is a debate scheduled for OCT 1 that NEEDS national attention. This will be the FIRST debate Cantor has ever done, so he's obviously threatened by Powell in this election.

that "polling tells us that moderate republicans are open to a candidate like Wayne. And our interactions with those people proves the polling to be accurate.
If Cantor didn't think he had to defend himself he would never have agreed to debate Wayne. Because he hasn't had a debate in 10 years (since the first election) this is not a skill he has been honing. There will be no softball followups from Wayne."

GOP Iowa Rep Tom Latham is, in a Tuesday interview on Simon Conway’s radio show, blaming Cantor for preventing the 2012 Farm Bill for coming up for a vote. Cantor is asking Latham to sacrifice himself for the City-Farm GOP coalition already existing in the House. "House leadership is in agreement. Moving a reauthorization or extension before there is consensus – and there is currently none - would not be wise,” Cantor spokesman Doug Heye.
