2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Top 5 Reasons MoveOn Members Voted to Endorse Bernie
(with the Most Votes and Widest Margin in Our History)
1. Bernies lifelong commitment to standing up to corporate and 1% interests to fight for an economy where everyone has a fair shot.
His refusal to accept the status quo of the wealthiest Americans using their power to influence politicians matters to me. If were going to push back against the rising oligarchy in our country, we need people like Bernie Sanders representing us in government.
2. Hes standing up for justice for communities facing oppression.
In a nutshell, he exemplifies the We the People style of democracy I believe in. He has stood by and with the people, supporting women, people of color, LGBTQ, seniors, and the poor against those who look to subjugate these historically oppressed groups for profit.
3. Hell say no to permanent war.
He represents integrity. He was also right about Iraq and I prefer his stance on foreign policy. I feel that he is concerned with getting our country on track and not getting us in more wars.
4. Electability: This election will hinge on turnout, and Bernie is inspiring and mobilizing the communities itll take to win.
I have never been as excited about a candidate as I am about Bernie Sanders. His liberal values match my own values more closely than any other candidate. I respect Bernie Sanders independence from corporate influence. His focus on social justice and addressing the economic inequality in this country make him the candidate for me.
5. Putting members in the drivers seat is what MoveOn does, and a whopping 79 percent voted to endorse Bernie.
I voted for MoveOn.org to endorse Bernie Sanders for president because he represents the progressive movement like this organization. His views align perfectly with my own wealth inequality, a living wage, job creation, Wall Street reform, racial justice, womens and LBGT rights, college without debt, climate change, and peaceful solutions to prevent war, such as his support for the Iran deal.

(57,936 posts)Cheating in something like that accomplishes nothing. It's only the reality of the support of Move-On members that matters.
If the election had been close, then Hillary might be able to blame cheating for the result. But 77% -- would take a lot of cheating to get that number.
And Hillary's fans were the ones most likelky to cheat because they knew already the outcome of the DFA vote.
Democratic activists are pro-Bernie. Hillary supporters are going to have to deal with that.

(8,658 posts)I could have voted once for Hill and once for Bern, as it was not my intention to 'jane' the numbers. I didn't think of that at the time.

(646 posts)Rules:
Voting is open to anyone who has been a MoveOn member prior to the start of the voting period. While any person may cast a ballot, only the votes of MoveOn members prior to the start of the vote will be counted.
You may change your vote as many times as you like, but only your final vote will be counted.
Members will be asked to choose between endorsing Hillary Clinton, Martin OMalley, Bernie Sanders, and making no endorsement.
Voting opens Thursday, January 7 at noon ET / 9 a.m. PT and closes at 2:59 a.m. ET Monday, January 11 / 11:59 p.m. PT Sunday, January 10.
This is a big decision, and one thing weve heard loud and clear from MoveOn members is that its important for us to stand together. To win the 2016 presidential endorsement of MoveOn members, a candidate must earn a supermajority67%, or, technically, 66.67%of votes cast. If no candidate hits that threshold, we wont endorse in the Democratic presidential primary.
If an endorsement is made, well run a 100% positive campaign for that candidate.
No matter whos endorsed in the primary, if members choose to make an endorsement, weve heard loud and clear that MoveOn members of all stripes want us to work to support the Democratic nominee in keeping a Republican out of the White Houseand well do that.
Well announce the results on Tuesday, January 12 after a secure confirmation of the ballots cast.
But thanks for playing

(45,984 posts)MoveOn endorses Bernie by a vote of its members and Bernie is leading in Iowa and New Hampshire.
The Democratic Party is democratic again.
Uncle Joe
(58,426 posts)Two new polls out Tuesday show Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders pulling ahead in Iowa and firmly in the lead in New Hampshire. One of them also shows him leading Hillary Clinton among women in the Granite State.
Women in New Hampshire two months ago supported Clinton to Sanders 56 percent to 37, according to a Monmouth University poll. The latest Monmouth poll shows the senator reversing those numbers, gaining the support of 50 percent of women compared to Hillarys 44 percent.
In Iowa, which has been more friendly to Hillary so far this primary, Sanders took the lead in an American Research Group poll. Likely Democratic caucus goers support him 47 percent to her 44 percent, Former Gov. Martin OMalley received 3 percent.
In both these polls, Sanders received more support from younger voters and independents than Hillary, as he usually does, though interestingly in New Hampshire he has gained more support of voters 50 and older than Clinton, 50 to 44 percent.

(3,825 posts)especially in this race and not making the difference between our candidates and the crazy assed Republican's does nothing but divide us instead of uniting us. This isn't about Hillary or Bernie, this is about the Democratic candidates against bat shit crazy.

(819 posts)... and I pay dues. During the summer RA, they were asked not to endorse early, but looks what they did. With MoveOn, I got a vote. (Voted only once, used my real name).
Division is already here. Many of us are fed up with the Democratic Party being GOP lite and just as bought and paid for as the GOP.

Glamrock
(11,802 posts)1. If you're basing your choice of candidate on candidates supporters instead of policy positions, you probably shouldn't call other people fools.
2. All of Bernie's supporters are going to vote for Trump? Really?
3. As far as naivete goes, you are supporting a candidate whose favorability ratings are completely upside down. Doesn't make for a very safe election.

(3,825 posts)I've been here since the *selection and I've seen it all, I consider all this childish name calling proof that this isn't coming from life-long Democrats, and to those who have blocked me, I could care less. This election will be won by people who have worked hard and know what is at stake. Bernie has had over 30 years to get what he has proposed done, and he certainly hasn't accomplished much. For that matter, neither has anyone else, but I don't care how we get rid of Republicans and their poisoned ideology, I want it gone.
Glamrock
(11,802 posts)but I've been a serial lurker here since the Bush years.
Not sure what this lifelong/real Democrat stuff is about either. Not one for purity tests myself. I care more about policy positions more than I care if you're a Democrat or Independant.
Finally, I'm with you regarding the conservanazis. Can't wait to be able to do something about these gerrymandered districts. 2020 is a long way off! Can't come soon enough.

(11,945 posts)But you will gain more from understanding why you favor or oppose any given legislation. It's important to clarify for yourself the reasons why legislation is good or bad. It's not enough to know who is for it and who is against it. That's letting other people do your thinking for you. (I realize we can't spend our time reading legislation, but on important, contested legislation, we can try to find out what's in it and what it will do.)
Remember, HRC pushed the TPP when she was SOS. She loved it, she was its champion; she called it "the gold standard of trade agreements." She only "changed her mind" when she learned that a huge contingent of Democrats were against it -- and she needed their votes to win the primary.
Jackilope
(819 posts)... not a corporatist or hawk. Tired of the watered down Democratic creed of, "We're not as bad as them...".
The thing is, at least with MoveOn, it was a Democratic vote vs elites telling us who they endorsed.

(10,007 posts)One of them will defeat the Republicans in the General Election, which means the country will go one of two ways: pro-corporate/pro-war, or anti-corporate/anti-war.
It's good that Move On listened to its members and chose the latter path. Party unity is not more important than moving the country away from corporate oligarchy.

(58,426 posts)super majority of at least 66+% before they could make an endorsement, so this wasn't just a setup for promoting one candidate over the other, it wasn't about division this was about unison or abstaining.
The people chose unison and active support.
MoveOn to their credit was gauging the will of the people, whether one likes the results or not, this was democracy.
