2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNY TIMES Puts the ENTHUSIASM Bernie Sanders is Generating on Their Front Page

In an apparent (and uncharacteristic) concession to the reality of the 2016 Democratic Presidential primaries, a mainstream publication has acknowledged that Bernie Sanders popularity is not just a charming aside, but is actually posing a serious threat to his main opponent. Todays Times article Hillary Clinton Races to Close Enthusiasm Gap With Bernie Sanders in Iowa opens with this:
The enthusiasm gap spilled abundantly into view in recent days, from the cheering crowds and emotional outpourings that greeted Mr. Sanders, and in interviews with more than 50 Iowans at campaign stops for both candidates.
Voters have mobbed Mr. Sanders at events since Friday, some jumping over chairs to shake his hand, snap a selfie or thank him for speaking about the middle class. Did you get to touch him? asked one woman who could not get close enough after an event here on Saturday.
And then actually includes paragraphs like this:
I personally want to find out if shes trustworthy or not, said Katie Bailey, 71, of Cedar Falls. Theres so much un-trust. I want to eyeball her.
Matt Fagerlind, 36, also attended Mrs. Clintons Waterloo event, but he found himself thinking about how Mr. Sanderss rallies had the same uplifting emotional intensity as Barack Obamas in 2008. I think Sanders is going to give her a good run, he said, describing himself as unmoved by Mrs. Clinton and planning to vote for Mr. Sanders.
The following is an admission I, personally, havent seen in a mainstream publication at all:
It goes on to give the Clinton campaign the obligatory acknowledgement of her continued front-runner/hard-to-beat status. But then (quite surprisingly, for me at least) ends with this humdinger:
I love to see him. He motivates me, Mr. Permar said on Sunday, sitting in the front row at a Sanders forum on veterans issues in Marshalltown. I get emotional. It brings tears that someone is talking about the issues that we should be concerned about.

I personally, like most American's have been able to watch

As the saying goes" Time will tell" : and time has told us Hillary
is very special American Dem.
Among many things I have always been impressed with her fighting

She is very fine politician most of the time: Just like FDR and LBJ,

I don't know when it will sink in that there is a reason most people like Bernie Sanders, but it won't be because I can join in their conversation.

I was just outside the doors trying to sell some Bernie in Portland t-shirts when the event organizers were telling people then that the doors were shut and no one else was being let in.

The line was still going out to streets where one couldn't see an end to it then. I wish I'd thought to get out my cell phone then to take a video of that scene then, as it would have really heavily illustrated what happens at all of the overflow crowds at Bernie's events and how so many people are outside waiting to get in as well as inside the event.

She is not a good candidate. Maybe a good person when you know her or work with her, but not a good candidate. She just does not have the charisma and love of people that Bernie has.
Bernie has won many elections, often against the odds.
Feel the Bern!
I feel like Hillary and her advisors are out of touch with America 2016. They still believe they can buy their way into the White House.

(22,308 posts)How disheartening it must be for those aides to be told "no" over and over again when trying to get people to sign those cards.
I think this is the kind of thing that makes up people's minds for them. Anyone who had the guts to tell an aid "no" will be very unlikely to spend the day caucusing for her.

There were 900 people who attended Bernie's event in Ankeny, a suburb of Des Moines. The rally was held at night and it was freezing, in the single digits. But people came out anyway.
After the event (yesterday), I entered data from Sanders supporters who VOLUNTARILY left their names, addresses, phone numbers for the campaign. They weren't forced to sign in. They could stop at the table and fill out the paperwork that was sitting there--if they wanted.
I spent four hours putting that data into the VAN yesterday!!! I was not the only person doing this. There were tons of comments too, "Please call me!" and "I want to call and canvass!".
We will be calling those people to volunteer. Most importantly, we will be getting them to the caucuses!!

(24,411 posts)Iowans reel against gimmicks and games. These cards strike me as pressure sales tactics.
It feels pushy. Candidates are supposed to be earning our support. Not cajoling us into signing something. It's weird.
I think it's out of step with Iowans and our caucuses.
When I went to one of Hillary's events, there was a lot of pressure. Her people were very friendly and professional, but it was almost like walking into a clothing store where the employees are working on commission.
They had us sign these cards when we were standing outside in the freezing cold, waiting to get in the building. I refused and I was told, "This is your ticket to get in. If you want to come in, this is your ticket."
Seriously? Once we were in, her organizers were begging us to sign those "commit to caucus" cards. It was all just too much.
Iowans are so diligent and mindful of the seriousness of the caucuses. We are first in the nation, and we are humbled by this. We really want to make a good decision--for our country. So, we attend these rallies in order to gather information. To have multiple people demanding that you sign commitment cards and fill out personal info cards as a "ticket" to get in the door--is a lot of misplaced marketing tactics.
We want to listen and learn, not feel like we're being culled for data.

(20,958 posts)i guess their field managers will get to gloat on their great commitment card exercise for a couple of weeks, but when caucus day comes and those numbers are WAY off, somebody's going to want their wubbie.
CoffeeCat
(24,411 posts)Its "coerced" information. It's not organic. This leaves you with many comment cards, but most likely a fair number of them are, as you said, "worthless."
At the last Sanders rally, we put blank paper on tables with pens. When people walked in we told them that they could fill out their name/address/phone if they wanted--so we could contact them about volunteering or reminding them of their caucus location.
Hundreds of people left their info. I put that info into the VAN and it took me hours.
That's the stark difference.
And logistically, what a waste of time to call all of those coerced numbers! Don't you want your people calling numbers that are going to bear fruit?
As you also pointed out, when caucus day comes and they're feeling confident about a certain precinct because they have 100 comment cards signed from people in that precinct--they may be in for a rude awakening. People signing a card that is shoved in their face are being polite. That doesn't necessarily signal full support. To some it may, but not all!
I get Clinton's emails too. I must get 5 emails a week, telling me that I need to "commit to caucus" with a big, red button that I can click to do so. Seriously, enough all ready. Bernie doesn't engage in nonsense like this. It's really out of place in a caucus campaign.

(20,958 posts)could have come from DWS and the FL Dem Party list (easily), but that's not how it *should* be done either. i do marketing for a living. opting-in to a list, is opting-in...TO THAT LIST.
FL Dem Party is the only non-candidate (partisan) list i belong to. and i only take their emails to see how awful they actually get before changing up their comms strategy.
but i can say, that i personally know a paid social media manager who works for a well known candidate, who shared his email list with a fellow dem (who her client doesn't care for, btw, and would have a shit-fit if he knew). i think she did it just to prove she had "power" and "could make things happen." staffers will do the stupidest things to show they have power. that's why VEEP is much closer to the truth than House of Cards.

"Elizabeth Warren is not running for president." BANNED from the Warren group.
"Manny violated the DU TOS." Banned from the Bernie Sanders group. And I am a Bernie supporter.
My thinking is that the candidate groups serve no purpose here. The only haven safety is to ditch them all. I stand with GDP, where discussion is not limited by a club card and secret handshakes.
But please be polite here, of course except when discussing the candidate groups.

(24,411 posts)At Bernie's event in Ankeny, he was making his way out of the venue, but there were rows of chairs in the way. Everyone was rushing over there, but we were blocked. So people, including myself, were standing on the chairs and attempting to walk on the chairs to get to him. There was a huge crowd doing this.
I looked over at the guy next to me, who was also standing on a chair and I said, "Oh my God, I'm a middle-aged woman climbing on chairs to take a selfie with a presidential candidate."
We both chuckled.
I imagine that this may have happened at his other events. Sanders was everywhere in Iowa over the weekend.
It's stories like this that are only going to add fuel to the "Feel the Bern" fire. I really wouldn't be surprised if his crowd sizes grew much, much bigger. The word is out!!
The people who have been attending these Iowa events were "early adopters." Now that the crazy caucus season is upon us, and the media is covering his incredible events--I bet this produces a groundswell of support and also people who are curious about all of the excitement.
This is only going to get better, folks!!

(2,217 posts)We all know why we support Bernie or Hillary, and we can discuss their stands on issues of importance. But the "news" media will not report their positions on any issues. To them it is merely a popularity contest (or some might call it a "horse race".)
All we get from the news is "Sanders generates more enthusiasm than Clinton" or "Clinton still ahead in the polls". No explanation from the news of why Clinton is still ahead or why Sanders generates more enthusiasm. Not a word about the issues.

(5,400 posts)The media was thinking there was an outside chance of things unfolding this way, of course they will be ready to exploit this moment for ratings.
And they are waiting to be able to portray Secretary Clinton for her wizardly performance in bouncing back.
Lol, the featured article, "How we got things so wrong" is probably not on the horizon. It has to get in line behind the one dealing with the full story of what their self serving/misguided ties to our government can lead to.
But I'm thrilled at Senator Sanders campaign getting the opportunity to reap the benefits from all this. It was a long, hard, slog to get to this moment. May there be many more such, over the next nine years.

BTW, I am a h.s. librarian in a very multicultural school and National Honor Society Advisor. I've been worried about African American support, i.e. middle aged women pictured at Drake U last night were cheering on HRC's response re abortion or something.
Just a small sample from my day: one of my students was giving a speech the other day. I asked her what it was about, and she said: Bernie Sanders. Now, admittedly, she's too young to vote. But this was before my usual sharing of my opinion. Another student, I played a segment or two from Killer Mike interview. The following Monday he came in and told me he had watched the rest of the video and he wanted me to know that he registered to vote. Bam!!!!!! Now let's do that by the thousands. And thousands...

Maybe if the Times had actually acknowledged Sanders as a real candidate, and had been following and reporting on his campaign, this would not have come as such a surprise. This enthusiasm for Bernie has been there since he announced his candidacy. Your readers have been expressing it in the comments for months and begging you for more coverage of the Sanders campaign. You guys have just been too busy shilling for Hillary to notice.

(3,919 posts)is my motivation to support a sincere candidate who does address the issues "that we should be concerned about." it's going to take all of us to work with bernie - long after he is elected. we must turn this ship around. president obama, i believe began the turn from the brink of destruction in '08.
since then we've been on a long arc/ trajectory to get the ship (our nation) turned around & back upright.
when bernie get's into office, in time and with all of us working toward this end, people will begin to see the improvements in their daily lives - more jobs, a living wage, safer communities and respect for all colors and cultures, health costs will come down, etc. families will be able to save money, maybe even have some extra for a vacation or a newer vehicle, or music lessons for the kids, and college education will not mean racking up $100's of thousands of dollars of debt. with bernie as president and all of us working together, and people feeling more secure, bigotry and blaming neighbors or targeting a neighbor's color or culture or whatever - will loose it's power. communities will seek to find common ground.
