So how are folks going to get to Chicago from the East Coast? Just wondering.

In the 60s they had ways of busing people in...

if the protestors want to use it. I hope that means they don't intend to make us use it and only it.

and I saw no permit yet for occupy, move on, anti-war protesters. I hope they get in there with the permit requests.

about? IMO when we submit to these restrictions, we've already lost.

But I don't think they will allow themselves to be roped off into "free speech zones"

I don't think Occupy is about ignoring all rules and regulations. I think they will attempt to get a permit. If they are refused, then they will probably go without one. I think they do get marching permits though.

Staying seperated from the action or from the crowd will not go over at all, I don't imagine.

My concern is...

The only "successful" direct actions held against an event I can think of are ones where chaos ensued, causing media blowback (expending political capital and good will, to get egg on their face, in other words). Seattle 99, Chicago 68.

That's because the media and TV-land ignores protest marches even when a million people block off the streets peacefully, as in the Iraq War marches.

Wisconsin may have been an exception because it was a sit-in of the Capitol building.

The tent cities are different because Occupy refuses to go away.

Maybe the solution, therefore, is a sit-down lockout strike (???)

(In Chicago, that is.) Like in Wisconsin?

That would make it difficult for the media to ignore the protestors. Such ideas I hope will be deliberated upon... and not broadcasted prematurely... like they did with the November 17 action on Wall Street that preempted the shut-down of Zucotti Park. Unfortunately from what I've heard, Occupy Chicago is struggling quite a bit?

Americans claim to insist that they will not tolerate disruptive protest,

yet we only seem to be entertained by violence. It's all very titillating.

I know that occupy does understand that the arrest and violence of the police gets them the best coverage. They remind themselves of this while they are trying to remain peaceful while getting sprayed and beaten. I think they understand the importance of remaining peaceful, and I think that they are very good at doing so. It seems that they are going for a long sustained peaceful approach rather than try to jump it up with the use of violence and petty crime.

However, they can't control every, or any, group other than their very own local people. Anyone can join in the protest. So they push peace but can't really stop what other people do. And this G8 is gonna have a lot of other people. It won't be the Chicago Occupiers who cause any problems, in my opinion, but I'm sure they will get blamed for any.

Generally, if the authorities are not going to try to stop free speech and protests, I think there will be a few minor incidents by arses, but a generally peaceful event. If they try to rope them off or restrict their march path, shit could turn nasty. If they just let them march, it will go smoothly.

Yes, it is the fact that they won't leave, they won't stfu and go away that makes Occupy successful. That is why the camping was so important. It shouted "we're still here"

The G8 event certainly should be historic.

I don't know that they would attempt a sit in/ lock down kind of thing at such a huge event, but you never know what they will do. I will probably go with whatever they decide.

I'm too old and broken to run, so I'm gonna try to stay away from any trouble. While I may be ok with getting arrested for Occupy, I would rather not do it out of state at an International event with federal laws taking the lead. lol
