(998 posts)From a business model perspective, the admin. probably get more "hits" on DU during some of these brouhahas called threads.
More hits I gather, can translate into more dough for them. The financial incentive is not there to create a friendlier enviornment for women.

(3,724 posts)Kudos to you. And if there was any doubt remaining, it's been stated as clearly as possible: women's rights are up for debate. Anti-gay? Nope. Anti-semite? Nope. Women? Eh - let's discuss and perhaps you all can 'educate'. Hahaha what a fucking joke.
Now for those of you with one hand on the alert button and the other hand only god knows where: go ahead and hit the button. I don't give a shit.

(39,961 posts)in the slightest that people keep posting the "breast-baring" posts.
Those are women, making their choices, and making their voices heard the way they can. I'd say the same for downtrodden men that wanted to bare their genitals.
A certain amount of titillation (to pardon a pun) is going to happen over such images because they are taboo without reason in said countries. The US included. If you get outraged over a woman with her boobs being displayed, then I suggest you consider what your outrage means. None of those women signed an agreement that they should be holy, chaste or anything of the sort. That is their choice to be photographed.
I think they are brave, and they are taking a stand. Just because I would not do it doesn't mean that they shouldn't do it. Did you not notice that one of those women in the photos had her nipple hacked off? She bared that for the world. That is incredible bravery. She already knew what the punishment for declaring her feminism was. She had already endured it.
Look at that picture of the woman in leggings and boots. Look at her missing nipple and tell me she has no right to demonstrate.

(110,159 posts)puritan comment endlessly put out.
it is man, using it against woman, which these women knew was gonna happen and their own agenda ranks all, that is offensive.
as for boob or dick threads. i was allowed a dick thread and you did not see the same reaction and behavior in that OP as you do the boob threads, which says it all.
it is about ownership.
there was none in the nude men thread. just embracing of nakedness
the boob threads? men took ownership.

(24,096 posts)It's everything to do with 'women's parts' splayed out for that gaze thing, especially considering how things have been working here on DU for a time now. And working in the world for forever.
I know there were serious contributions to the real issue, but a lot of it was just ammunition against women/feminists of DU from the known few who are always there with lighter fluid in hand.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)was missing her nipple.
She displayed it anyway. She already knew her consequences.
I can dig it up if you like, but she's wearing doc martins, and you can see she's missing her left nipple.

(42,674 posts)I thought it was an inverted nipple. I simply find it sad that an unsustainable protest gets so much press because of nakedness. They have every right to demonstrate, of course they do. They even have the right to anti-Islamic hate speech, but that's where my support stops.
Non-violent protest is a time honored tradition, but naked women being hauled off by a group of men strongly reminded me of porn sites like publicdiscrace. I'm waiting for the naked porn protest pictures. Porn is very topical these days.
FEMEN goes beyond titillation and right into objectification. But as far as telling those women how to do what they do--I ain't the one.
In My perfect world; lots of people would go naked. Lots.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)not inverted, since she wasn't in any way pregnant. We can complain about these young women's methods, but they have a legitimate gripe even if you don't agree with how they went about it.
ismnotwasm
(42,674 posts)That bothers me, on different sites and blogs.
I think Young women are doing what they can. It's all the work women are doing and NOT getting attention because they're NOT naked that irritates me. Tons of activism, and the naked women get the press.
Truth to tell, back in the day, I'd be the first one to take my clothes off for protest. It was a long while before I learned why it won't accomplish much.
(By the by, an inverted nipple has nothing to do with pregnancy, not saying you're wrong-it's an anatomical defect)

(42,674 posts)At Fri Apr 5, 2013, 08:01 PM an alert was sent on the following post:
I'm sorry Skinner, maybe I'm built too low but I can't understand your reasoning on this at all.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1259&pid=1125
REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)
ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
This is a backhanded swipe at Skinner: "maybe I'm built too low". Whisp is accusing Skinner of being arrogant and seeing other people as below him. This is just false, and very unfair. If anything, Whisp is the rude one here -- Skinner is being very patient and respectful.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Apr 5, 2013, 08:09 PM, and the Jury voted 1-5 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: My take is she is simply trying to make a point and they are talking at cross purposes here
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: This is the silliest damn alert I've seen in a long time!
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Skinner's a big boy and doesn't need you to alert for him.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT and said: I agree with the alerter's assessment, in every way.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.
I was juror number 1.

(14,177 posts)I think it is because I have a bunch of people blocked. Mostly the frequenters of the gungeon and coincidentally the number of posts I see bashing and attacking other members has gone way down.
But, I did notice this Sea Beyond has a huge fan club and I might have to end up blocking them too.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)pretty much seems like idiocy to me, even though I'm friends with some of the ones that went that far.

that's funnier than what I thought. Not necessarily more wtf provoking, but really a lot funnier.

(57,757 posts)compared to some others. I had to completely redo my jury blacklist.
There is a bit of overlap between the gungeoneers and anti-feminists, but not a whole lot.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)I haven't blocked a single person for just being pro-gun ownership. But, if they are pro-gun but against background checks or if they say stupid stuff like well criminals will just break any new gun laws anyway, it's a pretty fast track to getting blocked. And the people who are rabidly pro-gun ie don't want any new laws passed no matter what and think that drums are for guns and not marching bands, well they do tend to be a bit irrational in other areas as well, but YMMV.
BainsBane
(57,757 posts)Who display personal animus and can goad me into saying something I shouldn't. Unfortunately, that's more than a few.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)I think I might be doing something wrong. But, seriously I have a huge problem with people that seem to me to be pro violence. Not that I am a pacifist far from it. But, I am pretty non confrontational and I wouldn't use a gun or any other kind of violence as a first resort and I don't really feel the need to subject myself to people that seem like they are cheering on violent solutions to a temporary problem. That being said if someone breaks into my house they might want to rethink what they are doing, cuz I won't let them just mess with me I have a bat.
BainsBane
(57,757 posts)I guarantee it.
I am with you 100% on the violence issue. Guns are a major issue of mine. Have you joined the gun control reform activism group? http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1262

(7,237 posts)The only other useful reason to alert/hide is to lock someone out of further participation in a thread.

At Fri Apr 5, 2013, 06:37 PM, an alert was sent on the following post:
I and many others are suggesting there be clearer rules about behaviour here.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1259&pid=1121
REASON FOR ALERT:
This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)
ALERTER'S COMMENTS:
Accusing Skinner of "talking down" to her. This is totally unwarranted. Skinner is spending lots of time and effort to explain himself -- accusing *HIM* of being rude is not right when Whisp is the rude one here. In this entire thread she is itching for a fight.
JURY RESULTS
A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Fri Apr 5, 2013, 06:44 PM, and voted 4-2 to HIDE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT and said: Hiding because even though Skinner can take care of himself better than we ever could, this is an irritatingly condescending post and Whisp needs to back-off before she gets PPR'd.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: I think Skinner can handle this.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT and said: I agree with the alerter - Skinner isn't talking down to her at all, and is actually being quite reasonable to a person that is being unreasonable.
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given

I remember a few days back there were a bunch of "baring their breasts" OPs, but I didn't click on any (too many issues on the burner to take on any more), so I can't comment on them, but I admire your fortitude and defense of your position in the face of power (the 'ban hammer' as someone said upthread).
