The constant attempt to portray things as balanced.

Last week a big story broke about a dentist who pulled out all of her ex's teeth in a fit of revenge or something. It was posted on DU more than once I'm sure. Anyway, it turns out it was a hoax.

Meanwhile this story was barely mentioned.
http://news.yahoo.com/cornwall-man-admits-gouging-girlfriends-eyes-005409274.html

Not at all on DU, and I didn't hear about it until just now, when someone on another feminist board mentioned it.

But of course violence against women is so commonplace, isn't it? So, I guess that makes it somehow less newsworthy?

I don't know. I'm pissed off now thinking of all the 'but men get raped too!' shit, and all the other similar crap.

We know, guys, and who is raping men the vast majority of the time? Who causes most of the violence towards men? Who is *usually* the one demeaning and berating a man for not being manly enough? OTHER MEN!

Fuck.

A handful of ads portray men as sex objects so suddenly that means women can't complaint about being objectified in ads.

Totally logical, FOR FUCKING IDIOTS.

especially men, with the ads i brought up. but even at that, you are right. it is not the same. but personally, i feel the men are uncomfortable and is an example that they may be able to use as a point of empathy. and that was more my purpose of the thread, was to explore that. as i replied to a poster, the thread certainly has not gone in the direction i expected. lol.

I wasn't meaning to refer to your thread, but your thread did remind me of that other example of whataboutery.

It happens as regular as clockwork when women discuss objectification in ads, 'but diet coke!' 'old spice!'

It's pig-ignorant but so sadly common. Logic is in such direly short supply.

no if ands or butts.... it starts small and if allowed, escalates. it is proven pattern.

that is a horrid story.

i thought the dentist story too far out there. good to hear it was bogus.

as far as men being raped, and it continually brought up when women discuss the issue of rape, and the comments from men that it is a joke.... take note, not only is it the men committing the assualt (over 98% per FBI) but it is the men that make the prison jokes. almost overwhelmingly women say knock it off, or are not the ones joking. so even the jokes..... point the finger where it belongs.

agreed.

Close male companion is continually assailing me with whataboutery. At least he recognizes how damaging the patriarchy is to men, too.

Ya gotta admit there is a little of that in the "newsworthiness" aspect of it. A woman serial killer, say, is the real deviant in the crowd (doubly deviant, as a woman and as a serial killer), so she makes the news bigger time.

But yes, sigh, nobody then goes around saying "See? Men bite dogs too! Dogs are victims of men! Just as much as men are victims of dogs! This proves it!", blah blah blah. It's newsworthy precisely because that isn't the case. And yeah, dogs still bite dogs a whole lot more than men bite dogs.

People just run around DU with their hair on fire making shit up left and right.

I trashed a couple threads that were especially heinous and spent the rest of the night practicing pole dancing and checking my tits and ass in the mirror to make sure I look hawt enough to catch me a man. (Right after I got done shopping for push up bras and false eyelashes and scheduled my bikini wax.)

Again, fuckity fuck.

You caught me right after I finally got around to changing out of my nightgown (had to get up at 6 today to finish a job due at 9 and didn't have time for primping) and putting on my support stocking (you need to be an 18-yr-old body-builder to do that without ripping your fingernails off and needing a lie-down after) before hobbling to the bathroom on my cane to don my stretchy pants and floppy top and fuzzy socks ...

Of course I'm not actually old enough to need the support stocking and cane permanently, they're just the sequelae of the snapped fibula, but hey, it's good practice.

Oh, and I'm with Clinton: I've got my long straight (thick and shiny) hair skinned back in an elastic, which is an especially unflattering look for me, but hair on my neck gives me some kind of pain/stress when I'm tired and working, and I no longer actually give much of a crap what the co-vivant sees when he looks at me. It's not like he's shaved all winter. Or maybe he has by now. I tend not to notice.

I admit, though, I dyed my eyebrows last week. I'd let them go while I was too short to look in the bathroom mirror, being in a wheelchair for 8 weeks, and I realized that one had gone almost totally white in the meantime. When your hair is still its original golden dirt colour, mostly, and your other eyebrow is still largely its original dark self, that just offends nature, I figure.

So now I'm all fixed for going out to that demo to call for all porn to be outlawed and most men to be sentenced to have big scarlet Ps tattooed on their, uh, foreheads.

Do you know you don't seem to be able to buy eyebrow dye anymore? A clever drug store cosmetics clerk suggested I try men's beard dye when this batch I have eventually runs out. Beauty tip of the day!

left a word out, fixed it

Violence against women is an important topic. But I am not sure this example really casts much light on the issue. Taking the time to anesthetize the victim and remove all his teeth is a bit involved compared to taking a frying pan and whacking him upside the head.

I am reminded that we can make a Comedy movie called "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" but not the reverse as it strikes to close to reality.

On second though could fabricate a story about some plastic surgeon that re-posses his ex-girlfriends breast implants and see how the response/reaction compares? And while both are a fabrication why do I still feel like somehow the guy who lost his teeth must have done something to deserve it?

and still, i can honestly say, i never feel that way. it is nowhere in me to feel stepping over the line is ok or deserved either way. but then, as i have posted often, i have never in a position where i had anything but good men around me.... and boys, and i was raised in a home that raised us as people, not gender.... and i believe in personal responsibility strongly, and ....

i am a libra. all things must be balanced, lol

maybe all of that helps me not to be able to ever feel, he did something to deserve.

though i can listen to a story and understand. i still can never validate a hurtful behavior.

oh and edit... you didnt have to go after the womans implants.... boobs, could have done a comparative with teeth. i mean, if it was about glueing the penis like one story, then i would get it.
