Once again this is related to some behind-the-scenes maintenance we've been performing. We're checking into a fix, but it appears that you're more likely to see this if you're using an older browser.

If you are seeing this, could you do me a favor and reply to me here -- give me a link to the thread and paste the sentence where you see it occurring. It would help us to know which characters aren't being displayed properly.

Are you using an older browser by any chance? And thanks for your help troubleshooting this.

And even clicking on the x does not get rid of them.

Looks like it shows up whenever you type quotation marks. “Like this” 😁

Just popped in to find out what they were.

I see them in place of quotes in many articles.

Browser: Latest version of Firefox.

It seems to include certain forms of punctuation like apostrophes, too.
