Related: About this forumI'm seeing people's post counts being displayed all of a sudden...
This is new.
Is it a permanent change?

... with a picture (to let people know what I'm not liking), but you people are too quick for me.

(149,569 posts)I'm not sure I like it either...
I was used to clicking on the username to see the count.

(8,543 posts)In fact, I didn't like it enough that I went ahead and hid all of that new stuff with Stylish. Now (for me) it looks how it did before but instead of a single click to reveal their post count and icons for journal, mail, ignore; now I have to open someone's profile page. Since I rarely use any of those functions, opening a page to access them is no big deal.
The whole click the username to reveal that stuff was one of the things I liked about DU3 over DU2, and now they are changing it back. I'd rather see them fix the issue with sorting the forums/groups by something other than Last reply for multiple pages than change something that seems to work perfectly fine as it is. (I wonder why they never consulted me about what to work on next? )

(12,008 posts)With the new layout, threads are so much easier to follow, I've tried to block out "the old way." It just seems sort of superfluous to me - more information than I generally need when following a thread. It was really easy to just click on a name and see the post count if I wanted to. Along the same lines, I'd like it if we could turn signatures off. That used to be an option... maybe it's been implemented on here again, but not the last time I checked.

(62,683 posts)being able to trash a thread you don't want to see.
I'd never turned off the signatures so I don't miss that feature.

I am using the Stylish add-on for FireFox to hide signatures, and also hide the newly visible post counts and associated icons. It's much easier on the eyes with the threads less cluttered.
Anyway, depending on what browser and operating system you use, there are various ways to implement simple changes on how the style sheets will display content here. Some browsers make it easy (e.g. Opera) and others are easy with an add-on (e.g. FireFox). Some are a little more involved, but are entirely possible.
To hide signatures, add the following to a user style in Stylish or as a separate user style sheet:
[div class="excerpt" style="border: 1px solid #bfbfbf; border-radius: 0.4615em; box-shadow: 3px 3px 3px #bfbfbf;"].post-sig {
display: none !important;
}
That's not 100% effective because some people are using code in their signatures that "breaks" the <p> element and reveals their signature, but it does hide an overwhelming majority of signatures.
I did something a little strange with the post counts, I made the text color the same as the background color - so the information is there, it just isn't visible. However, to make it visible all you need to do is highlight it like any text you want to copy and you can see the post count. Anyway, to make that invisible and also hide the profile, mail, journal and ignore icons I used the following:
[div class="excerpt" style="border: 1px solid #bfbfbf; border-radius: 0.4615em; box-shadow: 3px 3px 3px #bfbfbf;"]span.show-post-count {
top: 0px !important;
padding-left: 0.5em !important;
color: #e6e6e6 !important;
}
a.author2 {
top: 0px !important;
}
p.post-author2 {
padding-bottom: 4px !important;
}
h3.post-title {
padding-top: 1px !important;
}
img.star-icon {
top: 0px !important;
}
a.post-button-profile, a.post-button-journal,
a.post-button-mail, a.post-button-ignore {
display: none !important;
}
You can search google to see if Stylish is available as an extension for your browser/OS combination or alternatively you can google "user style sheets" along with your browser and OS to find out how to do it that way. Or just ask me and I'll try to direct you.

(63,645 posts)We have been concerned that new members have not been properly welcomed, because nobody recognizes that they are new. It used to be that when you posted on DU, and people saw your low post count, they would give you a warm welcome. But without the post counts showing, people did not know that people were new and have not been welcoming them.

Of course, we might use that low post count to accuse.........nah. Couldn't happen.
