(23,710 posts)Once our servers can't handle the number of incoming requests, the response time gradually increases, until responses are not received quickly enough by visitors' browsers and you see the "time out" error.
I know that everyone always jumps to "DDOS" when this happens, but there's usually a far more mundane technical explanation. Right now, we seem to be getting a huge surge in unwanted search engine crawler traffic. We're looking into why this is happening and how to mitigate it, but as of just now we've temporarily blocked some of those crawlers, and since then we've been able to turn off "members-only" mode and the site seems to be running fine.
We're still working on it on the back end, but hopefully from the perspective of the site visitor, things seem to be running okay again now.
Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
