Hello Everyone!

I'm glad I found this place, as I'm a 52 year old, white male, lifelong democrat from Mississippi.... Which makes me a pretty lonely fella, politically speaking! I'm a retired UNION air traffic controller, and served as a rep for my area during the Bush years, and in fact became a rep the year the FAA forced their "nontract" on us. Obama helped turn that around! I'm sure I've lost a lot of friends.....and maybe a few relatives because I adamantly speak my Democratic mind! Its good to be around like minded, left minded people!

It's great to have you with us! Just don't judge us too harshly just now, since it's close to the election and things here are getting pretty intense. But this is my third presidential election here and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. In 2004, I don't know how I could have survived without DU, and in 2008, I was celebrating with a whole community!

Get the latest news here and watch the debates with us! DU folks are the most informed on the planet and somebody's always here. I've made my home here since before the Iraq war and I hope you find DU to be a sanctuary, as I have. Sounds like you'll fit right in!

Hello slydog1227 and everyone. You brighten my days with your insights and humor. I have been reading this site every day for years, but have never posted. Welcome slydog1227! You couldn't associate with a finer group of people than those that post here regularly. I was drawn by the Top 10 Conservative Idiots. That column always made my week!

I wanted to post a thread about my Mother who is 79 years old. I couldn't post a thread because I haven't replied to any. So this is a reply to you and my debut on DU.

Mom loved George Bush. She did not like President Obama at all. We discussed politics a few times and totally disagreed, so we avoided it most of the time. I often wondered how she could vote against her own interests. She ALWAYS votes.

Lately, I've wondered what she thought of Mitt, but never asked. This morning, we were talking on the phone and she said, "I wasn't going to tell you, but I will.........I voted for Obama." My jaw dropped and I said, "No, you didn't."

She said, "I don't like Obama. But Romney is the worst person I've ever seen! He is rude and nasty and his wife is just as bad. I watched that debate the other night and I hated him. People said he won the debate, I don't think he won the debate. He was an asshole." That made me think a lot of old Republicans might have felt the same way.

After I composed myself, I told her she made my day, nay, my week!! Bonus: My brother did the same thing. He used to hate Obama, but I've noticed he has admired a lot of things President Obama has done. He is in a union, so that changed his viewpoint on the Republicans. I love this day!!! Just had to share it with people who will be happy with me.

Wow you are lonesome being from Mississippi AND a democrat. Just kidding. I too am new at this and am a retired UNION Officer for the UTU and a retired railroad conductor. I don't have enough money to be a repukelican and I refuse to be a 'wannabe' like so many that say they are republicans. I get crap full of the screAM (AM) radio, Faux News and I despise the Glen Beck mentality stalwarts and firmly believe that when one mixes religion and politics it is like mixing oil and water....it doesn't work!
