DU Community Help
Related: About this forumOMG!!!!
In this dire economy, in which so many are challenged to keep the wolf from the door, I have received some donations through Wishadoo! My spirit is lifted, and I am ever more hopeful that I'll get to stay in my house!
A great big and to the generous activists who are making such a difference in my life (and that includes the sweet DUers who gave me hearts last month!)!!!

(6,234 posts)Wishadoo WORKS.
There are some of us here who are really desperate. It takes real courage to say HELP. Sometimes that's the hardest thing of all. For the people using the service Wishadoo is their last hope. So please, skip your next dinner at Applebees and give the money to help one of your comrades instead.
There are 200K registered users on this website. If only 10% donated even a dollar a month we could probably help all the people in our DU family.

(8,267 posts)You're right: I had to come a long way to ask for help -- that ol' Protestant work ethic, the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps." I'm still determined to find a way to reciprocate, beyond the volunteer work I do.
I truly appreciate the people who are helping. I hope I'll get to pay it forward.

(6,234 posts)Respectfully....
A society that cannot care for one another simply because it needs to be done is not a society at all. It's a collection of sociopaths. If we all do what we can, whenever it needs to get done, that's plenty. Talking about "paying" turns us back into sociopaths again -- help becomes a commodity we trade rather than an obligation we owe to ourselves and to one another.
I get your point, but this is one of those times where I think the words matter.

(8,267 posts)is the key, for me -- just as I'd rather barter and use Freecycle than indulge in the relentless consumerism commiserate with capitalism du jour.
But, I get your point. "Paying" does smack of indebtedness in an unpleasant way...

(8,267 posts)I've received two small donations, both greatly appreciated, but I am still not close to making my rent and utilities next month. I'm getting a little better about not worrying. If I'm destined to be homeless, I've a good plan for continuing my activism.
And, I agree with you about One Grass Root. I wish I could send help her way!
