Why is there a 10-post minimum before starting a thread?

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't hard to find ten interesting threads to reply on. But being a newb, I kinda wanted to hang out for awhile, lay low, not make a fuss. But I really want to post an article I read today.

Oh, yes, of course The name's Melvin, but I shortened it to Mel in grade school so as to get beaten up less. Just got back from studying in Australia. G'day! (Well, it's actually 4 AM, but I'm still readjusting to California time.)

And, welcome back to the US. Hope you had good barbies and ate your fill of biquies and that marmite stuff.

The 10 posts minimum is to help fight the trolling population. They seem to enjoy dropping some jaw droppingly ridiculous right wing less-than-factual, i.e. lying, talking point they pulled out of their favorite echo chamber.

They generally like to post and run. (Heaven forbid they should read and learn something from a differing point of view.) And, they would love to bombard with post after post to gleefully revel seeing their work in print.

So, ten posts give us a chance to check them out before they can get their name posted on the home page 16 times with the same article.

Glad to see you made it. Don't be shy, because if you are, you're in good company around here.

Oh, there are still trolls on this site. Don't let them get you down. The good still way outweighs the bad.

Enjoy!

I understand your answer I guess; but I might have thought that the Help & Welcome would have been an exception. Not clear why you need to see 10 posts before you allow someone to post a question.

Same number of posts to be able to send DU Mail?

Also, does the 5 minute wait between posts go away at some point?

Advertisers are paying people to post ads. So, people sign up and put ads into popular threads. There is a team of DU volunteers to delete those posts.

You have just a few more to go again for the article unless you want me to post it for you.l

5. Thanks ...

I did not have an article, I was trying to post my question. I ended up doing it as a reply to you, so question answered. Going forward, I only have a few to go as you say. And this post makes one less I suppose.
