The problem? I posted a direct link to the EXACT same Salon article in GD yesterday AND IT WAS LOCKED, with "cbayer" saying it more properly belonged in the Creative Speculation forum.
The kicker? When I made another post in GD questioning why a Salon article was unacceptable for GD, IT WAS HIDDEN BY JURY DECISION!
So to repeat my question, what the fuck is going on here? (And if you're thinking I'm being irate now, you're right!)

(53,955 posts)If you are asking why was one locked over another, the possibility is the first (WillyT's) article didn't get an alert. Your hidden post, will more an SOP issue, could have been hidden because it was seen as whining about DU, and given you are new, some find that a bit gauche. You should have received a message with the alerter's comments, which should provide insight to the hide.

(8,028 posts)...should not have been locked. I don't blame him for being upset.
He posted Saturday night and received the lock. WillyT posted the exact same article on Sunday night and didn't receive a lock.
For the record, I don't understand why anyone would lock this article from Salon.com. JFK has been the topic du jour for several days now. The subject matter is current and Salon is a respected source.
My 2 cents.

(53,955 posts)They make the determination. You'd have to ask why one was locked and the other was not. His anger is irrelevant to my response.

(8,028 posts)I was just using your post to try to help Droning Predator clarify his position to no one in particular, since he's new and feeling understandably frustrated. I wanted to interject a little support on his behalf.
I hope you don't mind that I used your post like that.
I don't have access to the hosts forum so I'll let Droning Predator take it from here.

(53,955 posts)It's one of the reasons I miss META. This place can be quite frustrating, and now, there is nowhere to express it, which was supposed to be one of the defining features of DU3.
I don't have host forum access either, so that's why I can only hazard guesses, but given what I have seen in the past, they were well within the realm of possibility (i.e. no alert on WillyT's post (time can also be a factor)).

(8,028 posts)...that WillyT's post got alerted and survived a jury. That said, I'm glad it didn't get locked. I'm one of the people who rec'd WillyT's post.
Hopefully, Droning Predator will receive an answer as to why a host swooped in and unfairly locked his OP.

Behind the Aegis
(53,955 posts)First, there is a difference between an SOP alert and CS alert. The former goes to the hosts, the latter to a jury. A jury can never "lock"* a thread, it can only hide the originating post. The hosts can never "hide" a thread starter. Second, a host is not supposed to lock a thread without consensus, so if it was locked more than one host made the determination. The locking host is not the "final say" host. There have been occasions where hosts locked something without consensus, and the admins can step in and unlock (rarely), or the locking host is forced to unlock, but there have been a few times that hasn't happened (also rare). Hopefully, this clears up some misconceptions.
*(eta) While it is true a hidden post for a thread starter is a technical lock, it isn't usually referred to as a "lock." Just to be a bit clearer.
TeeYiYi
(8,028 posts)...for the clarifications. Some stuff there I was unaware of.
Hopefully Droning Predator will receive redress from the hosts or admins, regarding his complaint.

(53,955 posts)Sometimes, I get confused and I work as a host and have been on MIRT a few times. LOL!

(135,425 posts)WTF is going on here is probably this--you're posting this gripe in the middle of the night and no one in the host group has heard your complaint.
Things only get hidden if people complain. And even then, that doesn't always happen.
cbayer
(146,218 posts)The hosts felt they violated the SOP for GD and should be in the CS group.
Your OP about the lock was hidden by a jury because they felt it violated the TOS.
In the future, if you get a lock, the best way to appeal it is to send a PM to the locking host.
They will then take your appeal to the hosts group for consideration.
I hope that clarifies things for you.

(16,334 posts)depends on who you are and sometimes when you post.
I see others have told you how to handle this in the future but it's sad that it even has to be an issue.
