When DUers feel a post is particularly interesting, and want it to get a wider viewing, they can click the Recommend button on an OP. Enough recs will send a post high on the Greatest page, where perhaps more people will see it.
Also, people will frequently post a "Kick & rec" reply as a sort of compliment to the OP of a thread they approve of...

(60,010 posts)9. If a post gets 5 or more recs, it goes to The Greatest Page where more people are likely to see it.
If you look at the top of a DU page, you see tabs that say
Home
Latest Threads
Greatest Threads
etc
When you click on Greatest Threads, you get a page where posts are listed according to the number of recs they got
and by when they were posted.
