The language spec for HTML says that multiple, consecutive space characters will be compressed down to one space.

To get around this you might try using the "non-breaking space character" "& nbsp ;" (remove the spaces).

However there may be a better way to do what you want, depending on what you are trying to do.

2. I want to use a table in my post

When I produce the table using a Word document, all the columns line up well. But when I preview it here, there are no spaces between the columns, and each row lines up differently, depending upon how many letters or numbers are in each column, so the end result is a messed up jumble that can hardly be read, and certainly not fit for posting.

Mostly due to the way they can really mess up a site.

Your best bet might be to use a fixed-width font and a period or underscore to stand in for the trailing spaces needed to line up the columns.
