Democrat surrounded by Republicans in Oklahoma!
Yes it is as frightening as it sounds! I live in Oklahoma and it is not fun! Imagine my horror on election day. I always vote but it is always symbolic

1. Welcome, 1HappyDemocrat -- I lived in Oklahoma for several years myself

Thank you! I will have to check it out! Yes it is not easy. Knowing that you are voting on ceremony and principal only can be truly discouraging, and yet I do it anyways

3. I live in Oklahoma and have been fortunate to meet
a few liberals to commiserate with. My current job is tough because I am in Conservative Hell. I would never consider talking religion or politics in my current office.
FYI - Facebook can sometimes be your friend in researching other people that you learn you will be around. Depending upon how much they lock down their page you can sometimes get a clue (even checking out their friends) on how conservative or liberal someone is. That was how I figured out that the spouse of one of my co-workers is like Darth Vader level Conservative. I keep to myself in my current office. |

4. It is unbelievable
how hard it is for some people on here to understand how different things are here in Oklahoma. I'm pretty sure it's beyond my capabilities to explain it to people. And I am an English major. That is great advice! Yeah, I cannot even admit I'm a democrat on Facebook, my friends and family would delete me if they even knew. It is sad.

5. That is why I am very careful with Facebook.
I keep my FB page locked down and only allow a small number of people access. I use FB mostly for animal rights and liberal causes (and it can be a good information source).
It is funny because my nephew ended with the now ex-wife from hell. When her FB page is not locked down so I look at it occaisinally (as well the FB page of their son). I asked my niece one time that if _______ had gotten engaged to the guy she cheated on nephew with. My niece's reaction was "Are you friends with _______ on FB? Wait are you on FB? ![]() I told her yes I am on FB and no I did not friend ______ on FB. Apparently she had unfriended my sister and niece. I told my niece that since I never friended her, she would not have known to ban me from her page. ![]() Of course I got the lecture that if I friended the family I would know more of what is going on in the family. I still have not friended any family members. Living in Repubican hell, life is just too short to waste my personal time dealing with conservatives. FB is more of an informational tool then a social one. |

9. The Rising Tide Lifts All Boats
This isn't a judgment call against you -you do as you feel is right- but may I say as an Oklahoman who after 20 years away in San Francisco- probably the most liberal place in the world- I find upon returning an Oklahoma I do not know and am quite ashamed and a bit frightened of which is why I am taking the exact opposite approach you are and I make sure my Facebook and Twitter posts are all pro-Democrat and contain information debunking many Right Wing beliefs and always always (with respect) commenting or correcting on friends posts when they post ludicrous Republican propaganda.
My experience has not been one of being un-friended or deleted or attacked but I have had many positive comments and what I am most proud of many private messages from people like yourself "in the closet" so to speak who are grateful for my posts. Like Kennedy said "The rising tide lifts all boats" so I feel letting my voice be heard can not only keep me free of pent up anger and resentments but it can also maybe help another person see something they may not have being surrounded by all the Republican rhetoric and can maybe change a persons viewpoint or encourage them too to stand up and speak out for their beliefs each tiny drop raising everyone's consciousness a bit each time. I understand it's not for everybody, I was raised dyed in the wool Democrat by (thank God) two very liberal hippies in the middle of Oklahoma and my 80 year old mother is still out giving Mary Fallen hell every chance she can so its in my blood-- but if you can just consider the power you have to change people's minds by letting them know your political association and even empower the youth who also may be too afraid to say anything to see your example and be given the courage to choose as they feel not as they are told. I'm writing a country song called "I Got The Red State Blues" because I know exactly what you're talking about living here, I'm just to ornery to keep my mouth shut like you. LOL |

19. The actual place we vote is
at least 90 plus percent republican I have no doubt. All the campaign signage around the place is rethuglican and it's in a knights of Columbus hall so go figure lol
My wife and I enjoy being the subversives for truth whenever we vote ![]() |
